Destiny 2 Lightfall Mod Customization Explained

Bungie is completely overhauling mod customization in Destiny 2 Lightfall. Here's everything you need to know about it.
Destiny 2 Lightfall Mod Customization Explained

With the Lightfall expansion, Bungie is bringing a multitude of quality-of-life changes and fan-requested features to Destiny 2. Buildcrafting has always been an integral part of the gameplay experience, and Bungie wants to make it a priority for players going into Lightfall.

Many factors contribute to crafting the perfect build in Destiny 2. One of those is weapons and armor mods. Bungie is completely overhauling mod customization in Lightfall, and here's everything players need to know about it.

All Mod Customization Changes in Destiny 2 Lightfall

In its latest TWAB, Bungie has revealed how mod customization will work in Lightfall. Firstly, a new mod customization screen is coming to the game that would let players view all their currently equipped mods and the stats they provide on the same screen. This eliminates the need for going back and forth between the different pieces of gear and tweaking their mods separately.

Come Lightfall, Bungie is also changing how new mods are unlocked and the functionalities of certain mod types.

How to Unlock New Mods in Destiny 2 Lightfall

As of this writing, the primary way to unlock new mods is by purchasing them from Ada-1 in the Tower. Post Launchfall, all mods will be unlocked by reaching Guardian Rank 6.
For those unaware, Bungie is adding a new rank system in Lightfall called Guardian Rank. The studio describes it as a "knowledge ladder" that will feature 11 ranks within it. More details will be revealed before the launch.

New players will unlock armor and weapon mods as they climb to Guardian Rank 6. On the other hand, Veteran players who have spent some time in the game will start at rank 6 with all mods unlocked.

Elemental-type mods are getting removed & Artifact mods are getting tweaked in Destiny 2 Lightfall

In Lightfall, Bungie is removing elemental mods. This eliminates the need for having four different types of the same armor mod. Additionally, the combat mod socket is being converted into an additional mod socket for the given armor slot.

Another interesting mods-related change coming to Lightfall is that armor mods will no longer provide buffs to weapons based on the weapon types. Instead, they will provide buffs based on their damage type. It should make buildcrafting and mod customization a lot simpler going forward.

Bungie really wants players to understand the importance of weapons and armor mods in buildcrafting, which is why it's also reducing the energy cost of equipping these mods. It should give players more freedom to mix and match more mod types to make something incredibly powerful.

Artifact mods are getting a massive overhaul for the better in Lightfall. It's something a lot of fans will be pleased to know. Starting Lightfall, Artifact mods are Artifact perks that once players have unlocked, they will be able to use throughout the season. It means players won't have to equip those mods in their Armor slots like they have been doing until Season of the Seraph.

There's a catch, however, as players won't be able to unlock all Artifact perks together. Furthermore, they can only have 12 perks active at a time and will have to reset the Artifact to activate other sets of perks. Thankfully, resetting the Artifact post-Lightfall won't cost any materials.

And that pretty much concludes all the mod changes coming to Destiny 2 with the Lightfall expansion.

Destiny 2 Lightfall launches on 28th February 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
