{"id":1303,"date":"2019-09-13T08:09:39","date_gmt":"2019-09-13T08:09:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ginx.tv\/house-of-commons-calls-for-video-game-loot-box-regulation"},"modified":"2024-07-19T19:30:16","modified_gmt":"2024-07-19T19:30:16","slug":"house-of-commons-calls-for-video-game-loot-box-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ginx.tv\/en\/video-games\/house-of-commons-calls-for-video-game-loot-box-regulation","title":{"rendered":"House of Commons calls for video game loot box regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><p>A House of Commons committee has advised that video game loot boxes should be regulated as gambling and children prevented from purchasing them.<\/p><p><\/p><p>The recommendation comes as part of the digital, culture, media and sport (DCMS) committee&acirc;&#128;&#153;s report on immersive and addictive technologies, published on Thursday after months of parliamentary hearings with technology and gaming companies.<\/p><p><\/p><figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OWL-skins-1024x576.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-cf.ginx.tv\/imgcdn\/XRSPmZstWuIIWl6gzfs4S5FO4Bd8FY0NlhzMmvMZ5jI\/rs:fill:0:0:1\/g:ce\/aHR0cHM6Ly9naW54LnR2L3dwLWNvbnRlbnQvdXBsb2Fkcy8yMDE5LzA5L09XTC1za2lucy0xMDI0eDU3Ni5qcGc\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure><p><\/p><p>The Members of Parliament lobbying for the change say that big gaming companies have a duty to protect their players and consumers, especially children, from spending money on virtual items like loot boxes.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Head of the group of MPs, Damian Collins, said: &#8220;Loot boxes are particularly lucrative for games companies but come at a high cost, particularly for problem gamblers, while exposing children to potential harm. It&#8217;s time for gaming companies to be more responsible in dealing with the harms these technologies can cause for some users.&#8221;<\/p><p><\/p><p>The report cited evidence from cognitive psychologists that such in-game features are &acirc;&#128;&#156;designed to exploit potent psychological mechanisms associated with [&acirc;&#128;&brvbar;] gambling-like behaviours&acirc;&#128;&#157;.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Academics told the DCMS committee there was not yet enough evidence on the psychological effects that gambling-style features in games have on children, partly because the industry has not released data it holds on the subject.<\/p><p><\/p><p>It&#8217;s worth looking at how much money these big corporations make from in-game content and microtransactions, or loot boxes as they are called here. According to Activision&#8217;s full-year earnings report the publisher made approximately &#36;3.6 billion from this type of content in 2016, which definitely shows why they&#8217;re keen to keep microtransactions in their game.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Electronic Arts, the brain behind games such as <a aria-label=\"FIFA (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ginx.tv\/en\/fifa\/fifa-20-player-ratings-leaked\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FIFA<\/a> and Madden NFL, makes roughly &#36;1.3bn a year from extra content, <a aria-label=\"according to chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen in 2016 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.ign.com\/articles\/2016\/03\/02\/this-is-how-much-money-ea-makes-on-extra-content\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen in 2016<\/a>.<\/p><p><\/p><figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"FIFA-20-Dybala-1024x434.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-cf.ginx.tv\/imgcdn\/Osqx4W9Bk4uQ11lC_Cq9Lv9RD0MZpCZbZwY8pLvepGQ\/rs:fill:0:0:1\/g:ce\/aHR0cDovL2dpbngudHYvd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMTkvMDgvRklGQS0yMC1EeWJhbGEtMTAyNHg0MzQuanBn\" width=\"1024\" height=\"434\" loading=\"lazy\">\r\n<figcaption><em>EA will expect to make a huge revenue from FIFA points with the release of FIFA 20<\/em><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure><p><\/p><p>The group has also argued that video games should be labelled better, including warnings for parents which clearly show that the game features gambling elements.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Dr Jo Twist, the boss of UK Interactive Entertainment, has said: &#8220;The video games industry has always, and will continue to, put the welfare of players at the heart of what we do.&#8221;<\/p><p><\/p><p>Kerry Hopkins &acirc;&#128;&#147; vice president of EA games &acirc;&#128;&#147; has defended the company&#8217;s use of loot boxes, saying that they are &#8220;quite ethical and quite fun, quite enjoyable to people&#8221;.<\/p><p><\/p><p><strong>What do you think of this proposal?
