Epic Games’ Fortnite<\/a> is undoubtedly one of, if not the biggest battle royale titles out there. You can spend hundreds of hours levelling up your battle pass, completing challenges. To say it is a timesink and addictive might just be an understatement. Gamers in China, unfortunately, won’t be able to play Fortnite anymore as the servers are shutting down. To be clear, in China, Fortnite is called Fortress Night.<\/p>\n

Fortnite shuts down in China<\/h2>\n

Late in August 2021, we reported<\/a> on the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA), China’s main regulatory body for all types of media, including video games, issuing a new set of rules that basically allows for only three (3) hours of video game time per week for anyone under 18 years of age.<\/p>\n

Children can only play games for one hour each day over the weekend. Roughly one month later, and Fortnite servers in China are getting shut down according to the game’s official Chinese page<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Starting on 1st November, players in China will not be able to register a new account or download the game.<\/p>\n

On 15th November, the Fortnite servers in China will officially shut down. No official reason for the shutdown has been provided.<\/p>\n

The developers simply thanked everyone who “boarded the bus” and participated in the Fortnite “test”.<\/p>\n

Following a partnership between Epic Games and Tencent, Fortnite launched in China back in 2018. It was, however, a different experience than gamers outside the country are used to.<\/p>\n

For example, in China, all players who are alive at the 20-minute mark wins, and if you have been playing for three hours, the XP rate drops by 50% and challenges are disabled. <\/p>\n

At the time of writing, an exact reason for the Fortnite servers in China shutting down is unknown. Most gamers, however, will probably be able to take quite an accurate guess as to why Fortress Night will be no more on 15th November 2021.<\/p>\n
