Even if you aren’t an American football history buff and just play the annual Madden titles<\/a> from EA a bit, you will know exactly who John Madden is. <\/p>\n

The NFL legend, John Earl Madden, coach and sportscaster, is the namesake of the Madden franchise, and we regret to report that he has unexpectedly passed away at the age of 85.<\/p>\n

John Madden, born on 10th April 1936, is synonymous with American football. As the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978 (winning the Superbowl in 1977) and winning 16 Sports Emmy Awards as a commentator, as well as being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his coaching career in 2006, he was an absolute legend.<\/p>\n

The NFL announced<\/a> the news of John Madden’s death, explaining that they learned of his passing early on 29th December 2021. <\/p>\n

The announcement notes that John Madden “died unexpectedly” with no cause of death provided.<\/p>\n

Current NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, said: “On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families.<\/p>\n

We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.<\/p>\n

Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others.<\/p>\n

There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”<\/p>\n
