Apple is expected to unveil its mixed reality (AR\/VR) headset, dubbed ‘Reality Pro,’ in spring 2023, ahead of its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. The headset, which has been in development for seven years, was originally scheduled for release in 2020 but was delayed multiple times due to various issues.<\/p>\n

According to a Bloomberg report<\/a> by Mark Gurman on 8 January 2023, Apple has reportedly shared the device with select software developers for testing, with its “Borealis” operating system (public name: xrOS) expected to be made available to developers at the June conference. The AR\/VR ‘mixed reality’ headset will reportedly run on this new xrOS operating system, with a hefty price tag of over $2,000.<\/p>\n

A recent MacRumors report<\/a> further added that the AR\/VR headset would be “a standalone device with powerful A-series processors” comparable to Apple Macs. The headset will feature two chips and up to twelve cameras for tracking hand movements and gestures and will feature an immersive viewing experience with high-resolution micro OLED displays and spatial audio.<\/p>\n

The company is rumored to ship the headset to consumers later in the fall of 2023. However, there are reportedly still several issues that need to be addressed, including hardware, software, and marketing. In addition, the development of the headset has also reportedly diverted resources from other projects at the company.<\/p>\n

It’s worth noting that Apple’s ‘Reality Pro’ headset will be more geared toward virtual reality, “with some limited AR capabilities.” Furthermore, the company is rumored to be developing a set of augmented reality glasses (i.e., separate from the AR\/VR headset) to be released at a later date (presumably in 2024 or 2025).<\/p>\n

The glasses will supposedly have a similar appearance to standard glasses, except with augmented reality capabilities, such as displaying information, overlaying virtual objects onto the real world, or enhancing the user’s environment in some way. Unfortunately, the cost of these AR glasses is not known at this time.<\/p>\n
