This boss is <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">not an easy task for any player to overcome, regardless of level, but not all hope is lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In this guide, we will show you how to locate Messmer in The Land of Shadow and provide some tips on how to defeat this flame-wielding terror in Elden Ring&#8217;s Shadow of The <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Erdtree<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mcetoc_1i19l6pt05\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Messmer, The Impaler Boss Location<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Messmer the Impaler is a two-phase boss fight <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that you<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> will naturally encounter as you progress through the DLC, as he is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ginx.tv\/en\/elden-ring\/main-bosses-shadow-of-the-erdtree\">a required main boss<\/a>. You&#8217;ll find Messmer in the Shadow Keep as you <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">make your way to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the top of the building. (Picture: Shane \/ FromSoftware)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Spear Thrust<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: At close range, Messmer quickly thrusts his spear toward you while you&#8217;re attacking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Double Spear Swing<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: At close range, Messmer swings his spear to the right and left towards you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Leaping Fire Spear Throw<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: At mid-range, Messmer leaps high <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">into the air<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and throws his spear very fast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Messmer&#8217;s Fury<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: A multihit combo consisting of several attacks:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jumps towards the target&#8217;s right backside.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Performs a flurry of at least 8 spear thrusts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Attacks from above.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Creates an explosion with multiple spears emerging from the ground.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fire Grab<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Messmer&#8217;s hand glows, and then<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;he attempts to grab your character, engulfing them in flame and impaling them if successful. This attack will likely kill or severely injure your character at any level of vigor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Leaping Fire Ball<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Messmer leaps into the air, summons a fireball in his hand, and charges toward you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"mcetoc_1i1c7ajlb3\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Messmer the Impaler Phase 2 Abilities<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure class=\"img-figure\" contenteditable=\"false\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" contenteditable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-cf.ginx.tv\/imgcdn\/8xWLBF4WR_qV68f1wg4LxOH-0nWW1_lCUEFHtdb-UQ0\/rs:fill:0:0:1\/g:ce\/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ2lueC50di91cGxvYWRzMy82NjdjYTBjNTE4ZWY4LVNoYWRvd09mVGhlRXJkdHJlZU1lc3NtZXJCb3NzUGhhc2UyLmpwZw\" alt=\"Shadow Of The Erdtree Messmer Boss Phase 2 attacks\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption contenteditable=\"false\">Below are the attacks that Messmer will use during phase 2 of the fight. (Picture: Shane \/ FromSoftware)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Explosive Bite<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Messmer transforms into a snake, soars sky-high, and then lands with a fireball in his mouth that explodes shortly after. This attack always starts in the second phase but may <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">occur later as well<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Snake Attack<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Messmer transforms into a giant one-eyed snake and attacks randomly up to three times. This attack has a long range.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrath of the Serpent<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Messmer roars and releases a two-part attack with a medium area of effect. Multiple snakes surround him during this. After the snakes are gone, he attacks similarly to the third and fourth parts of Messmer&#8217;s Fury.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Teleport<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Messmer attempts to attack the target from below in serpent form.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc;\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Messmer&#8217;s Finesse<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: At the end of a sword combo, Messmer attacks similarly to the first part of Bloodhound&#8217;s Finesse.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Taking on Messmer the Impaler <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is going to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> be a rough experience at first, but as you get to know his abilities and, most importantly, his cooldowns, you&#8217;ll be able to face him without too much trouble. During phase 1, the best strategy for both ranged and melee players is to wait for his attack cooldowns before countering or healing, as he hits hard and can delete your health bar in three or four swings if they&#8217;re charged.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-figure\" contenteditable=\"false\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" contenteditable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-cf.ginx.tv\/imgcdn\/DeQXU9DGY73YhenDN98E5cauV6pBJQvx4ReDDNprLUU\/rs:fill:0:0:1\/g:ce\/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ2lueC50di91cGxvYWRzMy82NjdjYTBjNTFiYWZmLVNoYWRvd09mVGhlRXJkdHJlZU1lc3NtZXJCb3NzUGhhc2UxVGlwc0FuZFRyaWNrcy5qcGc\" alt=\"Shadow Of The Erdtree Messmer Boss Phase 1 tips\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption contenteditable=\"false\">During phase 1 you&#8217;ll want to only engage Messmer as his attacks cool down as he doesn&#8217;t stagger easily and counters extremely quickly to being punished. (Picture: Shane \/ FromSoftware)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The reason for this is that Messmer has tons of gap closers he can use, be it his regular combos, the Leaping Fire Spear Throw, or even the Fire Grab, which he will run across the arena to perform. So, we suggest keeping your distance as much as <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">you can<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to see the telegraphing of his attacks, but also give yourself enough range to escape his pokes and optionally dodge into him to deal some damage or safely back away to cast your spells.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You&#8217;ll also want to ensure that when he does the Messmer&#8217;s Fury attack, you focus on rolling through it, as getting out of range can be inconsistent. For this fight, you&#8217;ll want to save as much of your healing as possible for the second phase and dodge as much as <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">you can<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-figure\" contenteditable=\"false\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" contenteditable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-cf.ginx.tv\/imgcdn\/XLGaGN8K8L2k5zKUNmSHqxYZucX8GxY4agwz9ZUMetc\/rs:fill:0:0:1\/g:ce\/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ2lueC50di91cGxvYWRzMy82NjdjYTBjM2NiNzE3LVNoYWRvd09mVGhlRXJkdHJlZU1lc3NtZXJCb3NzUGhhc2UyVGlwc0FuZFRyaWNrcy5qcGc\" alt=\"Shadow Of The Erdtree Messmer Boss Phase 2 tips\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption contenteditable=\"false\">For phase 2 you&#8217;ll want to dodge the larger snake attacks and punish them every time if possible, or take the time to heal and engage when he does his regular (though buffed) phase 1 attacks. (Picture: Shane \/ FromSoftware)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This leads us to the second phase called Base Serpent Messmer, where he uses all the same abilities from phase 1, but now he&#8217;s faster, can summon massive snakes to attack you, and can teleport around the arena for surprise attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For this phase, you&#8217;ll want to make sure you dodge the large snakeheads when they attack, and if Messmer teleports to the location of the snake&#8217;s head, you can squeeze in a few attacks. However, try to back away and not get too greedy as he doesn&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com\/Stance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">stagger easily<\/a>. When he does his regular (but now more intense) phase 1 attacks, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">follows<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the same formula of waiting for his attack to end, countering, and then backing off.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-figure\" contenteditable=\"false\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%;\" contenteditable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-cf.ginx.tv\/imgcdn\/G-jwlJxUfUlPNKgBfM3YadlIWFZJ3Y3zbKmaA7o_R7w\/rs:fill:0:0:1\/g:ce\/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ2lueC50di91cGxvYWRzMy82NjdjYTBjNTFjODk4LVNoYWRvd09mVGhlRXJkdHJlZU1lc3NtZXJCb3NzUmV3YXJkcy5qcGc\" alt=\"Shadow Of The Erdtree Messmer Boss rewrads\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption contenteditable=\"false\">Following these tips you should (with some practice and numerous attempts) be able to bring down Messmer The Impaler.
