Civilization 7 will be packed with over thirty different civs to choose from across three unique eras, and the latest reveal puts a cap on a trio of China civ options that represent different dynasties in Chinese history. While players will still have the ability to create their own unique version of history, China is will be among the few with a consistent thread between each age for what is essentially the same civilization. Fans are still a few weeks away from getting to try the game out for themselves, but new details about Qing China have provided a unique insight on just one of many strategies players will be able to utilize in Civilization 7.

One of the advantages to Civilization 7 separating leaders from civs is that many distinct civilizations that only existed during a specific period in history will now get represented in a new way. Unique additions like Hawai’i in the Exploration Age, Mississipian in the Antiquity Age, and Mexico in the Modern Age haven’t made the cut in previous games but will get their own spotlight in Civ 7.

Another benefit of this separation is that now unique eras of the same civilization get represented in a more diverse way. While you could play as China in Civ 6 and see the architecture change over time, that was pretty much the only signifier of how China has evolved throughout history.

Now, players will be able to experience three different dynasties from China’s storied history. Han China, a diplomatic and scientific civ featuring the Great Wall improvement and the Shì Dàfū scholar-bureaucrat unit, will be available in the Antiquity Age. Players can then become Ming China, an economic and scientific civ with the Mandarin merchant unit and Forbidden City wonder, when the Exploration Age begins.
