The Nintendo brand has maintained its brand image, developing properties and services catered for the entire family; however, an adult-only app appears to be made available for the Nintendo Switch. This left-field decision may come as a surprise to many, considering that Nintendo is known for their Mario, Pokémon, and Zelda IPs, but don’t worry, this 18+ app is only available in Japan.

News outlet VGC first reported on a video released by Nintendo Japan, which revealed the 18+-only app for the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. The main reason behind the launch of this app for the Switch Online service is for Nintendo to distribute two specific Nintendo 64 games, GoldenEye 007 and Jet Force Gemini.

These games have different age ratings in the US, Europe, and other territories; both games have a "Z" rating, which, according to the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO), is intended for players aged 18 and over. Additionally, this means that retailers are banned from selling Z-rated games to those under the age of 18, hence the decision to launch the 18+ app for the Switch.

While Nintendo didn't have to exhaust itself with the US regulatory boards for the game to be released, this app is the only intermediary solution to get the Z-rated N64 games available in Japan. Japanese players will now have to acquire the game through the Switch Online service and launch the game using this app to comply with CERO's regulations regarding its age rating requirements.

According to a tweet, Jet Force Gemini will be added to the service in December 2023, as GoldenEye 007 has been enjoying success since joining the Nintendo Switch Online since January 2023. However, Nintendo likely withheld these games' availability for the Switch Online in Japan due to their age rating or until a workaround was found.

As of writing, Nintendo has yet to announce the official availability of Jet Force Gemini through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The service frequently adds its iconic Game Boy, NES, and SNES games to its massive library for a monthly or annual service fee.
