Twelve players, three squads, one city under siege – Gears of War: E-Day‘s multiplayer reveal has landed, and it’s the most ambitious take on the series’ co-op formula since Horde first appeared in Gears 2. The Coalition has detailed everything from PvE class builds and mission playlists to a rebuilt Versus mode, with an official multiplayer deep-dive dropping alongside the announcement that the open beta early access kicks off on August 6.
Horde Siege: Three Squads, One Battlefield
Horde Siege is the new 12-player evolution of Gears’ iconic wave-based survival mode, built around three squads of four operating simultaneously across the same large map. Each squad drops in with its own mission, but the squads’ paths cross throughout – and what one squad leaves behind can become a lifeline for another. If a squad extracts ahead of you, their fortifications and equipment stay on the map for your team to find and use.
Maps are set across the districts of Kalona and are described as the largest Horde maps the series has ever produced, built to accommodate squad movement, shifting objectives, and Invasion Events that affect all three squads simultaneously. The beta will feature the Golden Quarter map – set in Kalona’s historic district – with three maps total available at launch and more confirmed for post-launch.
Classes, Missions, and How It All Works
Before each mission, players pick one of four Siege Classes, each with its own loadout, passive bonus, and a Tactical Gear ability on a timed cooldown. The four launch classes are:
- Assault – Mid-range flexibility, deploys a Sonic Disruptor to stun incoming waves, and gets a damage boost while in cover
- Breacher – Close-range aggressor with an Adrenaline Injector to rush high-risk areas, plus improved melee and status resistance
- Marksman – Precision damage specialist using a Pulse Drone to tag Locust for the whole squad, with improved critical hit damage
- Medic – Versatile support class carrying a Stim Vaporizer that can heal and revive even downed players from other squads, with faster health regen
There’s no enforced squad composition – running four Breachers is entirely valid, according to the official reveal. Classes can also be combined with any cosmetic skin, keeping fashion and function separate.

Missions are organised into three playlists. Blitz runs 15–20 minutes with one or two objectives; Siege is the standard 20–40 minute experience with multiple objectives across the map; and Horde is the long haul – lasting 50 to 60 minutes, tasking squads with surviving 10 waves of Locust with increasing difficulty as they try to destroy a single active R.I.G. Difficulty scales with class level, capping at Allfather difficulty for max-level classes only.
The shared Energy economy adds a strategic layer: squads collect a pooled currency from kills and objectives, but each player spends their own share individually at Supply Caches – choosing between defensive upgrades, new grenades, equipment, or turret installations that can actually be detached and carried as heavy weapons.
Versus Returns: Four Modes, Fair Starts
Versus is back as a clean, skill-focused 4v4 experience – no weapon mods, same starting loadout for everyone, with Power Weapons on the map providing the competitive edge teams have to fight over. E-Day’s new movement mechanics feed into the PvP sandbox without disrupting the classic Gears tension.

Four modes are confirmed for launch, according to supplementary coverage of the reveal: Team Deathmatch (with a new dynamic respawn system), Conquest (King of the Hill-style zone control), Demolition (bomb-planting across two enemy bombsites), and Crucible – a brand-new mode built around controlling a Power Core within designated zones. Six Versus maps will be available at launch.
The Coalition has also confirmed that cosmetics will stay gritty and grounded – no crossover or IP skins at launch, a deliberate design choice. Post-launch, five themed multiplayer seasons are planned, starting with Season 1: Emergence, bringing new maps, modes, characters, and skins on a rolling basis.
For anyone weighing up whether to jump into the beta, this multiplayer slate is genuinely substantial – more so than the typical teaser-before-launch drip. The Gears open beta early access on August 6 is worth putting in the calendar now. Gears of War: E-Day launches on Xbox Series X|S and PC on October 6, 2026.
