With the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 4, players have plenty of exciting new content to dive into, and Zombies fans are in for a treat. A classic game mode is making its return: Grief mode. If you're unfamiliar with how this mode works or need a refresher on what to expect in BO6 Zombies, we’ve got you covered. Here's everything you need to know about Grief mode coming in Season 4.

Grief Mode Returns in Black Ops 6 Zombies: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

As described in the official Call of Duty blog post for Season 4, “Grief Mode is a 4v4 competitive mode where two teams outwit and outlast each other. Capture zones to debuff enemies. No damage to other players. Respawns every third round.”

Grief mode overview
Grief mode in Black Ops 6 Zombies is a 4v4 team-based match where players don’t kill each other but compete to outlast and outplay the opposing team. (Picture: Activision)

In essence, Grief Mode sees two teams of four players—each aligned with either S.A.M. or Director Richtofen—battle for survival in the same zombie-infested arena. But here’s the twist: you can’t directly kill the other team. Instead, you’ll rely on indirect tactics like body-blocking, melee interference, and throwable disruptions to outlast your rivals as the undead continue their relentless assault on both teams.

True to its name, the defining mechanic of this mode revolves around the concept of griefing. Throughout each match, Capture Zones will appear—mini-objectives that, when activated, apply penalties (or “Griefs”) to the opposing team. These grief effects range from ammo drains and movement freezes to sudden Elite zombie ambushes.

It’s a battle of wits, coordination, and disruption, where the smartest plays—not the deadliest aim—will decide the victor.

Map Details and Gameplay Changes

Combat takes place in special “Grief Arenas,” which are sub-sections of standard Zombies maps. These arenas come pre-set with:

New map sections
Besides the maps gradually unlocking as you play, they will also be smaller and act as subsections of existing Zombies maps. (Picture: Activision)
  • Doors already opened
  • Power already activated
  • Faster zombie waves
  • Pack-a-Punch and Mystery Box availability
  • Salvage mechanics
  • Respawns every third round or through teammate revives

Because the objective isn’t to eliminate the other team but to outlast them, communication, planning, and clever tactics are key to victory. As long as one teammate is still alive, a team remains in the fight, creating high-stakes moments where clutch plays and well-timed revives can turn the tide.

Grief Mode was always a fan-favorite twist in Black Ops 2, but Black Ops 6 is shaping up to deliver the most refined and action-packed version yet. With the blend of PvE intensity and PvP mind games, it promises a thrilling, team-based experience unlike anything else in Zombies right now.

Grief Mode launches with Season 4 on May 29 at 9 AM PT. Get ready to survive, sabotage, and outlast the opposition—we’ll see you in the arena.
