Activision apologises for racist names seen in Call of Duty: "We know we have to do more"

A campaign to get the developers to take action against "racist and hate orientated names" looks to have achieved its goal.

With the recent outpouring of support both personal and corporate for the plight of African-Americans at the hands of police in the United States and elsewhere, some have pointed out that those that now claim to want to fight for the oppressed have a less than stellar record when it comes to combating racism.

One such case was brought to light by Twitter user ModernWarzone who took Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developers and publishers to task for not doing enough to stop people using racist language in their in-game name, a contradiction of Activision and Infinity Ward's claims earlier that day "stand alongside" those that are "speaking up for equality, justice and change".

The campaign #EndCODracism began trending on Twitter and a post on the Modern Warfare subreddit quickly gained traction.

This prompted Infinity Ward to make a statement on a day letter setting out changes they intend to implant to end the scrouge of racist language with-in the game.

"There is no place for racist content in our game," it reads. "We're issuing thousands of daily bans of racist and hate-orientated names. But we know we have to do more - and we are."

The explains five steps they are taking to combat racism, including "additional in-game reporting" and "adding filters and greater restrictions on name changes."

They also stress that repeat offenders will be handed "permanent bans" with no explanation about whether this means the account will be banned or they will go further and implement HWID or I.P bans.

The developers have also apologised to the community and speak of making an on-going commitment to making the space free of racism.

"We apologize to our players. This is our commitment to you, our fans, thank you."

The highly-anticipated fourth season of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was scheduled for release yesterday on 3rd, June but was delayed due to the anger and protests that have engulfed the U.S and elsewhere after the death of George Floyd, a black man who was killed by Minneapolis police offers.
