Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 – Release Date & What To Expect

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is widely regarded as one of the best anime shows in 2022, expanding upon Night City, a world first featured in the action RPG, Cyberpunk 2077. The anime joins the likes of Tekken: Bloodline and The Cuphead Show, successful video game adaptations for Netflix, and has ardent fans hoping for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2.

During the latest Group Strategy Update, Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED detailed plans to continue exploring the worlds of The Witcher and Cyberpunk outside the video games, but plans for the second season of Edgerunners have not been shared. We’ll be discussing if there will be a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, without sharing too many spoilers, and what to expect from the anime.

Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Getting A Season 2?

The biggest question fans and audiences of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are asking themselves following the release of the anime is whether there will be a second season. As of writing, Studio Trigger and CD Projekt RED have yet to confirm if the Edgerunners’ story will continue in a second season.

Since there’s no confirmation for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, there isn’t much to expect other than pure speculation from fans. However, with Studio Trigger moving onto other projects, including new animated films and series, it doesn’t look like production for Edgerunners is on the cards for the time being.

From a production standpoint, Studio Trigger positioned Edgerunners more as a standalone entry that was clarified on the series' webpage, which attributed to the reputation of the Japanese animation studio. They’ve previously developed single seasons for multiple projects, including When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace, BNA: Brand New Animal, and SSSS.Dynazenon.

Everything We Know About Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2

Especially given the events of the final episode, with multiple characters having their fates decided, it could be possible that one of the remaining characters may be promoted to lead. Likewise, it’s also possible that another character who existed around the same time as David Martinez could be the main protagonist for the second season.

Another possibility is for the second season to center on the origins of Johnny SIlverhand, portrayed in the Cyberpunk 2077 game by Keanu Reeves. Given the character’s involvement in the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion of the action RPG, it could be a worthy direction for the narrative, further bridging the gap between the anime and the video game.

However, it doesn’t mean that the story ends for the Edgerunners, as Studio Trigger and CD Projekt RED can expand their story and the world of Night City in spin-off projects.

Moreover, with CD Projekt RED committed to expanding the world of Cyberpunk beyond video games, we can expect more stories, new characters, and the same cosmopolitan world from this dystopian universe soon.
