Some Diablo 4 players are wondering if their hardcore mode character progression will carry over to Season 1, especially the Renown earned from Areas Discovered and Altars of Lilith. Well, we've got some bad news to share; depending if your character, with a lot of progress, is still alive and kicking.

This article covers what hardcore mode Diablo 4 players need to know about character progress carrying over to the next season, so let's get started.

Diablo 4 Hardcore Characters Need To Be Alive For Progress

Diablo 4 character progression, including the map reveals via Areas Discovered in each region, and Altars of Lilith, carry over across seasons. For hardcore players, however, there is a caveat.

Your Hardcore character with the progress you want to carry over has to be alive. Let's say, for example, you've reached level 70, cleared the map, and got all the Altars of Lilith on your hardcore character on the Eternal Realm. Then, you die, maybe to The Butcher in a Nightmare Dungeon.

Unfortunately, your dead character's progress will not carry over to a seasonal hardcore character. Yes, your character NEEDS TO BE ALIVE for the progress to carry over. To this end, we suggest maybe taking a break before Season 1 gets underway and not risk losing all your progress.

This was confirmed by Associate Game Director on Diablo 4, Joe Piepiora, answering a fan question on Twitter.

If your hardcore character is alive, you will want to follow the steps outlined in the next section of this article for the progress to actually show up on a Seasonal hardcore character.

How To Carry Over Hardcore Diablo 4 Character Progress

Don't forget to log on with Eternal Realm characters so your progress carries over to Seasonal characters! (Picture: Blizzard)

the system to carry over your progress (Areas Discovered and Altars of Lilith) from Eternal realm characters to Seasonal characters will only become active following the Season 1 update on 18 July.

Once the update is live, you have to log in with a character from the Eternal Realm so that its progress can be logged on your account for seasonal characters. If you have multiple hardcore characters with various regions explored, we suggest logging in with all of them once to make sure all your progress carries over to seasonal hardcore characters.

So there you have it, your hardcore character progress does carry over to hardcore characters in Diablo 4 Season 1, IF they are alive! If anything changes, we will endeavor to update the information in this article.
