The term cult hero is oftentimes overused, with football fans slapping it on any mildly decent player they stumble across. Then there are professionals like Gheorghe Hagi, perhaps the greatest example of what it means to be an underrated footballer.

Back when football fans raved about the likes of Diego Maradona, Michel Platini, or Marco van Basten, a young Hagi was ripping the Romanian Divizia A apart with Steaua Bucuresti.

By 1990, the then 25-year-old had scored 88 goals in 118 club matches for Steaua despite never playing as a striker, with him being deployed on a variety of offensive roles, most predominantly as an attacking midfielder or a left-winger. 

Romania's somewhat lukewarm performance at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, sent home by the Republic of Ireland in the round of 16, was no impediment for the versatile midfielder, who secured a move to LaLiga giants Real Madrid. Sadly, he underperformed greatly in his two seasons with Los Blancos.

After moving to Brescia and being relegated, a much more veteran Hagi turned up big time at the 1994 World Cup, helping Romania make it to the quarter-finals after shockingly eliminating Argentina led by an ageing Diego Maradona, well past his prime at this point. 

History repeated itself and the Romanian secured yet another move to a big team, Barcelona, where he once again failed to impress fans and neutrals alike, marking his final shot at a massive club. Regardless, Hagi's individual successes and flair on the ball are still fondly remembered by football historians.
