Are the Fortnite servers giving you trouble? Don't stress -- the developers at Epic Games are probably rolling out a major content update for Fortnite Chapter 5. But before the new patch goes live in-game, it's typical for the game servers to become unresponsive.
Still, many players might wonder, "Why are the Fortnite servers not responding?" or better still, "When will the Fortnite servers come back online?" Luckily, we've got you covered, detailing exactly when to expect Fortnite server downtime to end.
Update on 16 September 2024: The next Fortnite server downtime is expected to start on 17 September 2024 at 4 AM ET. Matchmaking will be disabled 30 minutes prior. The mainatenance period should last for about 3 hours.
When Will Fortnite Servers Come Back Online?
The Fortnite servers will experience downtime (with matchmaking becoming disabled) on 17 September 2024 at 4 AM ET to make way for the Fortnite v31.20 update. There's no telling exactly how long the servers will remain offline.
However, you can expect servers to come back online a few hours later that same day. Matchmaking is typically disabled for up to about 4 hours, which means the Fortnite servers should be restored by 5 a.m. PT | 8 a.m. ET | 12 p.m. GMT at the latest.
Note: The previous Fortnite v31.10 update server downtime lasted for a total of 2 hours (starting at 4:00 AM ET and ending at 05:47 AM ET)

We monitor when patches are loaded onto the staging servers to determine when their likely release dates are. Until confirmed by the developers, consider these dates pure speculation.

- 16 September 2024 at 09:34 BST: Fortnite downtime will begin tomorrow morning at around 4 AM ET. Matchmaking will be disabled 30 minutes prior to the maintenance period starting.
- 4 September 2024 at 05:47 ET: Downtime for v31.10 has ended.
- 4 September 2024 at 03:29 ET: Matchmaking will be disabled shortly. The downtime period will begin in 30 minutes and conclude by around 7:30 ET.
- 2 September 2024 at 05:17 ET: Fortnite downtime is scheduled to start on 4 September. The maintenance period should last for about 3 hours.
- 15 August 2024 at 06:00 ET: Downtime has ended.
- 14 August 2024 at 17:45 ET: Absolute Doom approaches the Battle Royale Island... menacingly! Downtime begins tomorrow, 8/15, at 11 pm ET, with matchmaking disabled shortly beforehand. Please note that patch sizes will be larger than usual.
- 6 August 2024 at 06:00 ET: Downtime has ended.
- 6 August 2024 at 04:00 ET: Downtime has begun.
- 6 August 2024 at 02:00 ET: Downtime for v30.40 begins at 4 AM ET with matchmaking ending shortly beforehand.
- 23 July 2024 at 07:45 ET: Downtime has ended.
- 23 July 2024 at 04:00 ET: Downtime has begun.
- 23 July 2024 at 02:00 ET: Downtime for v30.30 begins at 4 AM ET with matchmaking ending shortly beforehand.
- 22 June 2024 at 04:00 ET: The Fortnite servers are back online.
- 21 June 2024 at 16:00 ET: Downtime for v30.20 begins at 1 AM ET with matchmaking ending shortly beforehand. Brace yourself because this Summer update is going to be quite large. Expect servers to be down at least until 5 AM ET.
Please note: Epic Games typically releases minor updates every Tuesday (not including major patches or content releases). We will update this article weekly with any new information. As a result of the scheduled maintenance, Fortnite players will not be able to log in to the game, access game services or matchmaking, parties, friends and messaging services, voice chat, stats and leaderboards, the Fortnite Item Shop, or Fortnite Crew.
Only the Fortnite website will be operational during this period. Notably, all other Epic Games services should remain active, including the Epic Games Store, Rocket League, Sideswipe, and others. Once Epic Games has integrated the new Fortnite game patch, the servers will return to normal and become available for play. You can check the official Epic Games server status or the Fortnite Twitter page for updates.
If you're still struggling to log in or access the Fortnite game services, it is always a good rule of thumb to connect your PC or console directly to your router via a LAN cable, as Wi-Fi can, in some cases, be prone to network issues.
