Fortnite World Cup won’t return in 2021 over safety concerns

Epic has announced competitive plans for Fortnite in 2021, which won’t include the Fortnite World Cup.
Fortnite World Cup won’t return in 2021 over safety concerns

The Fortnite World Cup will not return in 2021, developer Epic Games has confirmed.

In a blog post detailing Fortnite’s competitive plans for next year, Epic explained they have no plans to hold in-person events due to the uncertainty of safety amid the pandemic.

“Our intent is to eventually hold global in-person tournaments again,” the post reads. “But our priority for any such event is the health and safety of our players and staff.

“With so much still unknown about what is practical and safe, we do not plan to hold in-person events in 2021, including a Fortnite World Cup.

“We will continue to provide online competitions throughout 2021 with the hopes that physical events, in some form, can return at some point in the future.”

They also announced FNCS will continue throughout 2021, which will now have Trios as the standardised party size for matches.

The FNCS season for Chapter 2 Season 5 will start on 4th February, with more competitive events like weekly tournaments and Creator Cups also promised.

The lack of Fortnite World Cup next year will likely be a big disappointment for competitive players, especially considering other major esports events have moved the competition online this year in light of COVID-19.

With questions around Fortnite’s popularity as a competitive title, the next big question might be whether we’ll see another Fortnite World Cup ever again.
