God of War Laufey has an official release date: February 16, 2027. Santa Monica Studio confirmed the news at the game’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, ending months of speculation and giving fans a firm window to lock in.
A 2027 release had been widely anticipated after Santa Monica confirmed the game would ship on disc – a decision that carries extra weight given Sony’s announcement that it will stop producing PlayStation discs from 2028. The on-disc commitment clearly anchored the timeline, and Comic-Con delivered the concrete date to go with it.
A New Lead, and a Familiar Face Waiting in the Wings
Laufey – also known as Faye – takes centre stage here rather than Kratos, and early reaction has been split because of it. The game’s first substantial look came via a 20-minute gameplay segment at June’s PlayStation State of Play, which opened with Kratos and Atreus burning Faye’s body, the moment that kicks off 2018’s God of War. Kratos appears again briefly while Faye is imprisoned, but it remains unclear whether he features beyond those early glimpses, given that he’s otherwise occupied with the events of Ragnarök.
Some fans have praised the combat and visuals on show; others have taken issue with what they see as simplistic gameplay in Laufey’s opening section. The absence of Kratos as the main draw has predictably drawn criticism too, though that particular debate may cool once more of the game is seen.
A New Kratos Game Is Already Confirmed
The bigger long-term news from the Comic-Con panel came from Cory Barlog, Santa Monica Studio’s head of creative, who confirmed that the next Kratos-led God of War is already in the works – and that it connects directly to Laufey’s story. No release window was given, but the confirmation alone signals that Laufey is very much the middle chapter of a larger arc rather than a franchise pivot away from the Ghost of Sparta.
