In recent weeks there has been plenty of noise surrounding the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) since one of its founding teams was facing financial troubles.

According to comments by Alexander Jobst, the team's sporting director, the esports division of FC Schalke 04 will close its doors in 2021, spurred by the football team's Bundesliga relegation after more than two decades among the German football elite.

Although Schalke was never able to conquer an LEC trophy, their performance has led to great outcomes, with the biggest one coming during the 2018 Summer Split where they reached the Grand Finals and won the hearts of fans all around the globe.

Among the teams interested in acquiring their spot in League’s premier European competition were Team Heretics, Giants Gaming, Heroic, and even PSG, the latter of which is currently playing in Southeast Asia’s PCS.

However, following recent reports by Esportsmaníacos, the spot will be finally acquired by Team BDS, a Swiss organization based in France, who would have bought it out for 30 million euros.

In recent years, Team BDS has become one of the strongest organisations in the old continent thanks to groundbreaking performances in titles such as Rocket League and Rainbow Six: Siege.

This purchase is going through thanks to owner Patrice Bailo de Spoelberch, as according to rumours, his family's net worth lingers between 6 and 12 billion euros.

If confirmed, Schalke's departure and Team BDS’ LEC debut will take place until 2022 after the current Summer Split and Worlds 2021 wrap up, so there is a chance we watch the German team for a first and final time on the international stage.
