Venom Writer Hints He Wasn't Compensated For Spider-Man 2

It seems that not everybody got their due in Spider-Man 2.
Venom Writer Hints He Wasn't Compensated For Spider-Man 2

MILD SPOILERS FOR SPIDER-MAN 2

Spider-Man 2 has been released, bringing with it a cavalcade of accolades and extremely high review scores. There's a lot to love about the game, but what's not to love is that it seems both Marvel and Insomniac haven't paid their dues to writers who created several of the ideas used in the game.

Venom writer Donny Cates, who wrote for the character from 2018 to 2021, posted a GIF on Twitter that seems to hint that he saw no compensation for his work on the character being used in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Indeed, the creator isn't thanked in the credits or mentioned at all, despite the game using a lot of his ideas.

Cates (and his creative partner, Ryan Stegman) were the driving force behind a symbol seen in the game that denotes a symbiote, in addition to being the duo who first gave Venom wings in the first place. Both of these feature heavily in the game's final act, yet it seems that Cates and Stegman weren't asked for their input at all, nor were they offered any form of compensation in return for using their work.
