Mortal Kombat 12 Teaser Hints At Possible Reboot

A recent teaser from NetherRealm Studios hinted that Mortal Kombat might be getting a reboot in lieu of Mortal Kombat 12 - and that that reboot could be coming very soon.

The Tweet, published on the official Mortal Kombat Twitter account and dated 10th May 2023, shows a clock starting at the number 9. The clock then ticks on to 10 and 11 but stops dramatically before it gets to 12, skipping it and then jumping forward right to 1.

This could also very well mean that the next entry in the franchise will not be called Mortal Kombat 12. It's unknown what the title of the game might be, or if developers will decide to keep the "Mortal Kombat 12" title despite the possible reset. Other possible titles might be simply "Mortal Kombat" or "Mortal Kombat 1."

While NetherRealm Studios has not confirmed that this means a reboot is in store, that's certainly what most fans seem to think that the video implies. While a reboot might come as a surprise to some, the universal reset ties into the game's complex lore. Long-time fans will likely have seen this potential reboot coming after playing through Mortal Kombat 11 and its accompanying DLC.

So when is Mortal Kombat 12 coming out? During a Q1 earnings call earlier this year, Warner Bros. Studios revealed that the twelfth game in the Mortal Kombat series will be coming out sometime in 2023. A specific release date was not provided, so fans will likely have to wait just a few more months to hear more about the game and play it for themselves.

It's likely that NetherRealms Studios will announce more information about Mortal Kombat 12 in the near future, perhaps at the PlayStation 2023 Showcase slated for later this month.
