Cory Barlog, Santa Monica Studio’s head of creative, has confirmed that a new Kratos-led God of War game is in the works – and it connects directly to the story of God of War Laufey, which now has a confirmed release date of February 16, 2027. The announcement came during the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.
Details on the next Kratos game are thin for now. No title, platform, or release window has been confirmed, and Barlog offered nothing further at the panel beyond the connection to Laufey’s story. What is clear is that Santa Monica Studio is treating the Faye-led chapter as a deliberate bridge – not a detour.
Everything Is Building Toward Something
Speaking about God of War Laufey at the panel, Barlog said that everything in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and is designed to set up and expand what comes next. He specifically referenced Phranque – a character who has been part of the God of War universe from early on – as a sign of how the studio is building its world outward. “Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing,” he said.
This isn’t the first time the studio has reassured fans that Kratos isn’t going anywhere. Back in June, following the initial reveal of Laufey, Barlog said that “there’s always going to be Kratos games” in an interview on PlayStation’s YouTube channel. Santa Monica Studio’s official account reinforced the point, stating the team has “many more stories to tell with him.”
What Else Is in the Pipeline
Beyond Laufey and the unannounced Kratos follow-up, Santa Monica Studio has also confirmed a God of War Greek Trilogy Remake – revisiting the PS2 and PS3 era of the franchise – though that project is still in early stages with no release date attached. It’s a lot of God of War on the horizon, and the studio is clearly committed to running multiple threads at once.
Early reaction to God of War Laufey has been mixed, with some fans praising its combat and visuals while others have questioned the simpler gameplay shown in Faye’s opening section – and, predictably, Kratos’ reduced role. A brief gameplay reveal at the end of June’s PlayStation State of Play showed Kratos burning Faye’s body before appearing again to aid her during a short imprisonment sequence. Whether he features more heavily in the full game remains unknown.
With Laufey landing in February 2027 and a new Kratos game already positioned as its direct follow-up, the God of War franchise is clearly moving into a multi-game storytelling era – and the wait for answers starts now.
