It's time to put their best investigation hat on as Palians are now ready to begin investigating the strange activities in The Elderwood. Having completed The Elderwood quest with Nai'o and Subira, Palians will have the opportunity to further their exploration of this new Adventure Zone as they'll be running around, locating resources before collecting them for studying.

This is the premise of The Nature of Shadows, as they'll assist Subira by acquiring samples and helping Tamala finish crafting a specific potion that will come in handy when interacting with infected lifeforms. This guide details everything about The Nature of Shadows quest by listing all the objectives and providing a detailed walkthrough to complete this quest in Palia.

Palia The Nature Of Shadows Quest Objectives List

The Nature of Shadows is the next quest in The Elderwood questline, where the investigations into what "The Elderwood Tap" is and Nai'o's missing friend continue. This begins with studying the mysterious ecology of this new area, which has seemingly been infected by a hazardous substance found everywhere.

However, contact with this substance affected Subira negatively, as she now wonders how to collect samples without coming into contact with this substance, which is where Tamala enters the fray. How To Complete The Nature Of Shadows Quest In Palia?

Palians will have received this quest and a few side quests after completing The Elderwood quest, in which they can begin by meeting with Subira near an Ancient Tree at the center of the Elderwood Central Stables location. They can fast travel to the Central Stables from any Stable board in Kilima Village and Bahari Bay and begin chatting to Subira, who explained her initial examination into this area, including noticing a "strange energy present" infecting the lifeforms in The Elderwood.

She revealed that she came into contact with this "strange energy present," which affected her badly, even when stepping away from it. Recapping the events tht led them to The Elderwood, including the presence of a stranger activating a protocol which fired Flow beams and the appearance of "a strange new substance" in The Elderwood, she recommends collecting samples for further inspection at the Alchemy Lab, which she suggest starting with minerals found in the area.

As she continues the search for Nai'o's friend, who had gone missing, likely due to the events that occurred, Subira tasks Palians to collect Stone, Palium Ore, and Whitestone before returning to her with the samples. Whitestone is a new resource mined from its respective nodes, which can be recognized for a slight white mineral sticking out of the node, and most of the required minerals can be mined at the Red Blossom Cave, south of the Elderwood Central Stables location, where a Fine or Exquisite Pickaxe is needed.

A few mining runs at the Red Blossom Cave should help Palians gather enough resources needed before heading back to the stables to turn them in, which Subira attempts to study, but they have no traces of this "strange new substance" or energy. She concludes that it doesn't affect the minerals in the location, while updating them that she had failed to find Nai'o's friend again.

Realizing that they'll need to be in direct contact with the infected plants in The Elderwood to collect samples, Tamala enters the conversation, much to Subira's dismay. Tamala reveals that someone had been "haunting" her home in Bahari Bay, her reason for being in The Elderwood was because of the "light show," and her curiosity revealed that the area had changed and so she had conducted experiements to better understand the substance that's found almost everywhere in the Elderwood.

As a result, she "formulated" a potion that may help collect samples without being affected by this "strange new substance." However, after speaking with Subira away from the stables, she believes Tamala may have ulterior motives for helping. Deciding to agree to Tamala's offer, she reveals she needs a few more ingredients for the potion, and she tasks Palians to find the remaining items she needs.

They can speak to Tamala immediately after this to learn where to find the ingredients she needs before setting off to track everything on her list. Based on our initial explorations of The Elderwood, the Cave Piksii bug is found near Staircase Mushrooms, which we found plenty of these mushrooms at the Red Blossom Cave, and we can use the Smoke Bombs to catch them.

According to Tamala, the Toadstool Floatfish can be caught without bait in lakes, and the lakes surrounding the Okanaa Bog are a good spot to find them. The Elderwood Orchids can be found across the "forest floor," so Palians must be on the ground floor to find the pink-hued flowers.

Infected Essence is found throughout The Elderwood, but we found a good amount of essence at the Red Blossom Cave and the Mitana Grove. With the ingredients foraged, return to Tamala, who will use the items to craft the Elderwood Portion, which, when consumed, they can interact with and forage infected flowers, plants, and trees, but if they need more, they can buy more potions from Tamala's Potion Shop, which is found at the stables.

Now tasked with collecting infected plants and essence in the overworld, they can locate Infected Ancient Trees and Infected Elderwood Orchids, to name a few, and forage them by consuming the potion, which lasts ten minutes. There are plenty of Infected Ancient Trees, Elderwood Orchids, and Essences in the Honeymiel Slope, Mitana Grove, and Deep Woods locations, and once they have enough, return to Subira.

Subira proceeds to study the sambles, and she reveals that this substance has "completely eradicated" the Flow from them and thus has taken over them down to their core. As Subira wants to study other lifeforms in The Elderwood, Tamala advises against this due to the nature of her potions only working on plants so far, and if they wish to study infected bugs, fish, and huntable creatures, they'll need to find a way to incorporate the Infected Energy into their tools.

They'll need to consult with the respective Guild Masters, Auni, Einar, and Hassian on these matters, and Palians can select any of these options to trigger their respective quest and complete The Nature of Shadows. Palians will be awarded 25 Renown, a Sacred Flower, and the next quest, depending on which dialogue option they selected, namely Bugging Out (Auni), Shot in the Dark (Hassian), and Something Fishy (Einar).
