Rockstar is finally doing right by last-gen players – PS4 and digital Xbox One owners of Grand Theft Auto 5 can now upgrade to the current-generation PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions for free, with the offer going live on Thursday, June 19, 2026. That means 4K resolution, 60fps performance, ray tracing, HDR, 3D audio, and faster loading times at no extra cost, permanently.
What’s Included in the Free GTA 5 Upgrade
The current-gen versions of GTA 5 launched back in March 2022, and according to Rockstar, they “introduced high-end PC visuals to the console experience” – a claim that’s hard to argue with when you look at the full feature list. Here’s everything you’re getting if you make the jump.
Current-Gen Graphical and Performance Upgrades
- Up to 4K resolution support
- Up to 60 frames per second
- Ray tracing (reflections, shadows, ambient lighting)
- Improved texture quality
- HDR options
- Faster loading times on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S hardware
- Immersive 3D audio support
- Platform-specific feature support
Save and Progress Migration
- One-time Story Mode and GTA Online character migration available
- GTA Online characters, money, and purchases carry over to the new version
Why Rockstar Is Doing This Now
The timing is deliberate. Rockstar has tied the free upgrade announcement to The Kortz Center Heist, a new GTA Online mission built specifically for current-gen systems – so getting last-gen players onto PS5 and Series X|S hardware ahead of that drop makes obvious sense. It’s a goodwill move that also serves as an engagement play.
It’s worth noting this reverses a long-standing stance: when the current-gen versions launched in 2022, Rockstar charged an upgrade fee rather than offering the kind of free cross-gen path that publishers like CD Projekt had already normalised with Cyberpunk 2077. The free upgrade is now permanent, so there’s no rush – but with Rockstar building momentum ahead of GTA 6’s November 19 release date, now is as good a time as any to get onto the best version of the game.
Rockstar has been making deliberate design choices across both titles in the lead-up to launch – if you want to understand how the studio is approaching game mechanics in the sequel, Rockstar’s modernised approach to chance mechanics in GTA 6 is worth a read.
