Marss shuts down MkLeo’s Smash Ultimate winning streak at Genesis 7

US player Tyler “Marss” Martins managed to end Leonardo “MkLeo” Lopez’s incredible winning streak at Genesis 7, winning the tournament with Zero Suit Samus.
Marss shuts down MkLeo’s Smash Ultimate winning streak at Genesis 7

Leonardo “MkLeo” Lopez was an easy favourite heading into Genesis 7 after winning the past three Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Wii U Singles tournaments, but his all-conquering streak officially came to an end in 2020.

His run in the top eight didn’t start out well either, with Ezra “Samsora” Morris repeating history by sending MkLeo to the losers bracket in a nail-biting 3-2 victory.

His comeback through the losers bracket looked shaky against Eric “ESAM” Lew, who had MkLeo on the ropes with his frenetic Pikachu until the final fifth game where he took the 3-2 lead.

Marss, playing as Zero Suit Samus, was a dominant force throughout the entire winners bracket - defeating both ESAM and Samsora with relative ease.

After MkLeo made quick work of a rematch with Samsora, the grand final saw the Mexican player go up against Marss in one of the most chaotic matches of the tournament.

The two players looked evenly matched at the outset, although some incredible kamikaze plays and acrobatic defences proved too quick even for MkLeo’s Joker.

Marss sealed victory over MkLeo in a clean 3-0 sweep, earning his first ever Genesis title.

MkLeo won the Smash Ultimate Singles at Genesis 6 last year, and previously won both the Wii U Singles tournaments in the two years prior, with many hoping he’d achieve the 4peat.

You can check out the top eight from Smash Ultimate Singles below.

1. Tyler “Marss” Martins (Zero Suit Samus)

2. Leonardo “MkLeo” Lopez (Joker)

3. Ezra “Samsora” Morris (Peach)

4. Eric “ESAM” Lew (Pikachu)

5. Rasheen “Dark Wizzy” Rose (Mario)

5. Enrique “Maister” Herndandez Solis (Mr Game & Watch)

7. William “Glutonny” Belaid (Wario)

7. Paris “Light” Ramirez (Fox)

It wasn’t the only upset at Genesis 7, with Zain Naghmi defeating renowned player Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma in the Melee Singles Tournament.
