With Microsoft's acquisition of Activision-Blizzard looking more and more likely to finish up soon, many gamers are wondering about Blizzard Entertainment's dormant franchises, including StarCraft 3. Well, it appears that Microsoft might not even "need" to revive the iconic real-time strategy (RTS) franchise, as there's reason to believe StarCraft 3 is already in development.
Is StarCraft 3 Development Underway?
A rather credible leak has suggested that Blizzard has already begun development on StarCraft 3. This information comes from journalist Jez Corden (Managing Editor at Windows Central, who, in a now-deleted tweet, basically confirmed StarCraft 3 is currently in development.
According to a report by Insider Gaming, Jez Corden answered a fan question on Twitter, stating that Microsoft does not need to revive the StarCraft franchise. Corden then answered, "Yep," when asked if he knew something about StarCraft 3.
Before the tweets were deleted, Redditor u/SharkyIzrod managed to transcribe the public conversation on Twitter between Jez Corden and a follower, which you can read below:
- @Justin5037: Favorite WOW memory and do you think Xbox will have any interest in reviving StarCraft if the deal goes through?
- @JezCorden: Msft won't need to revive starcraft
- @BacTeRiiA_TV: Star Craft 3?
- @JezCorden: Yep
- @BacTeRiiA_TV: You know anything? 😭
- @JezCorden: Yep
This strongly suggests that StarCraft 3 is indeed in development. With the success of Diablo 4, it is clear that Blizzard's IPs still hold a lot of weight, so it would make sense if the development started on the third mainline entry of the iconic RTS franchise.

There is no official release date for Starcraft 3, nor even a release date window. We don't expect StarCraft 3 to come out anytime soon, either, but it is great to have a hint that the game might be in development.
Remember to take this information with a grain of salt until Blizzard officially reveals StarCraft 3 to the world. For now, all we can do is hope that this leak/rumor is true!
