How To Pick Locks In Starfield

Here's how you can pick locks in Starfield.
How To Pick Locks In Starfield

There's a vast open world to explore in Starfield, and often, you will come across a locked container, weapon case, or a door that you may be very tempted to break.

Lockpicking has always been part of gameplay in past BGS titles, and it's no different in Starfield. However, it works a little differently, especially since you require digipicks instead of actual lockpicks to unlock any item. The lockpicking mini-game may also take a while to get used to. As such, here's our guide, which explains how lockpicking works in Starfield.

Lockpicking In Starfield Explained

To pick a lock in Starfield, you have to fill all the open slots in every ring with the correct key combinations. During lockpick, you get four key combinations, which you have to cleverly use to decrypt different layers of encryption.

While it may seem simple, you have to be cautious when picking a key combination, as it may be something you need to insert in the second ring. Examine all the possible options before attempting, or you will lose the correct key combination required to insert in the subsequent ring.

You can, however, undo it to get back the key combination, but it will cost you a digipick.
Thankfully, there's also an auto slot feature, which will automatically show you the correct key combination required for the lock. However, you gain an auto slot only after successfully using a key. Every time you use a correct key combination, you gain one auto slot.

Locks in Starfield come in four difficulty tiers. These are Novice, Advanced, Expert, and Master. While you can attempt to pick a novice lock from the beginning, you have to unlock and upgrade the Security skill to access subsequent difficulty tier locks. It will also increase the amount of auto slots you get.

How To Get Lockpicks (Digipicks) In Starfield

The best way to get lockpicks or digipicks in Starfield is by purchasing them from vendors. There are plenty of vendors in every city that have a handful of digipicks in store. It's best to stock up on them frequently since you need them a lot. You can loot them from enemy corpses or find them in random containers, but the only sure-shot way to get them is to buy them.
