Naughty Dog Presses Pause On The Last Of Us Multiplayer

According to a report by Bloomberg on 26 May 2023, the gaming studio Naughty Dog is reassessing the project's direction, with only a handful of the original team still committed to its completion.

Although the project hasn't been officially scrapped, the majority of developers associated with it have been redistributed to different assignments within the company. In a statement to Bloomberg, Naughty Dog reportedly apologized for the delay, emphasizing that the game needs more time to meet the high expectations of the franchise's fanbase.

They reaffirmed that while the multiplayer version of The Last of Us may be momentarily on the back burner, they are not giving up on it. The studio later took to Twitter, explaining to fans: "We know many of you have been looking forward to hearing more about our The Last of Us multiplayer game. We're incredibly proud of the job our studio has done thus far, but as development has continued, we've realized what is best for the game is to give it more time."

Naughty Dog continued, "Our team will continue to work on the project, as well as our other games in development, including a brand new single-player experience; we look forward to sharing more soon. While these updates might disappoint some fans, the studio also hinted at an exciting development: a brand-new single-player game. However, whether this will be a follow-up to The Last of Us series or a new game entirely is unclear. Despite the dark fate of the multiplayer version of The Last of Us, Naughty Dog reassured fans that they would share more information about the project within the year.
