After more than a decade, one of the most beloved tennis franchises of all time is coming back with TopSpin 2K25. Just announced by 2K Sports, the game carries on a gaming franchise that started more than 20 years ago. The announcement was paired with a teaser trailer, and even this small glimpse tells us plenty about what could be on the way when the TopSpin 2K25 release date finally arrives.

When you branch out from massive international sports like basketball and baseball, sports gaming isn't quite as consistent. Tennis has been a mainstay of sports gaming for decades, and it was the original Top Spin that pushed things forward in taking the sport seriously.

If you want something over the top, Mario Tennis has been a mainstay for Nintendo. From the original Mario Tennis release on N64 to the more recent Mario Tennis Aces on Switch, or even the versions of tennis available with Wii Sports and other cartoonish options, proper realistic tennis simulation games have been a rarity.

Top Spin saw regular success in the 2000s, but there was little movement after Top Spin 4 was released by 2K Sports in 2011. Tennis World Tour did attempt to serve as a successor, but a rushed release led to fairly negative reviews. Now, there's finally a top contender back on the court.

Nearly 13 years after Top Spin 4 was released on PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360, we finally have a true sequel coming with TopSpin 2K25. You can watch the trailer above, which highlights the simulation and realism they're bringing to the table thanks to years of continued innovation.

The trailer does note that it "contains a mixture of gameplay and cinematics rendered in game engine." While not every aspect of the game will look exactly like the trailer, particularly camera angles, it being rendered within the game engine is a very positive sign. No release date has been revealed, but 2K Sports did state in the trailer that it's "coming soon."
