Devil May Cry 3 Crimson Mod Is the Closest Thing to a Remaster - For Now

While an official remaster of Devil May Cry 3 may still be a distant dream, players have taken matters into their own hands with the release of the DMC3 Crimson Mod.

While many would argue that Devil May Cry 5 represents the peak of the series, there’s long been a consensus that DMC 3 was the true standout, only held back by the technical limitations of its 2005 release (which was still a massive achievement, to be fair). Now, fans have stepped in with a new project: the Crimson Mod, designed to elevate the game to modern standards. And honestly, this might be the closest we’ll get to a remaster of Devil May Cry 3—at least for now.

If you’ve watched as many Devil May Cry 3 speedruns as I have, you’ll know the DMC3 community is still as passionate and dedicated as ever. One recurring discussion point is how DMC3 remains one of the most action-packed and tightly designed entries in the franchise, but it lacks some of the polish and quality-of-life improvements seen in later titles.

That is, until now. A new mod called Crimson Mod, available on Nexus Mods and GitHub, brings the refinement fans have long wished DMC3 had from the start. The mod includes a new HUD inspired by Devil May Cry 5, improved lock-on and camera systems that offer better control and visibility during combat, and even local co-op with a wide range of customizable settings. It also introduces on-the-fly style switching—a feature previously exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version of the HD remaster—and much more.

It doesn’t stop there. Crimson Mod adds advanced mechanics like inertia and guardfly (in the style of Devil May Cry 4), a fully functional weapon wheel for seamless switching, reduced input lag, and new gameplay modes such as Legendary Dark Knight and Must-Style. In many ways, it feels like the remake or remaster fans have been asking for.

Of course, the mod isn’t official, and you’ll need to own the Devil May Cry HD Collection to use it. Still, hope for an official remaster isn’t entirely lost. Series creator Hideki Kamiya is back working with Capcom and has recently expressed interest in remaking the first entry in the franchise. So while we might be waiting a while for something official, Crimson Mod serves as an excellent stand-in for now.
