GameStop Website Reportedly Leaks Customers' Credit Card & Personal Details

On 26th November 2022, multiple users reported that the GameStop website was malfunctioning and leaking private customer data, including names, birthdays, addresses, order history, and credit card details. Initially reported via Reddit, it is still unclear if this latest hiccup resulted from the website malfunctioning or an elaborate hack.

According to user reports, GameStop customers could see other users' private information whenever they visited their accounts, such that when they refreshed the page, different user details were displayed. To make matters worse, customers reportedly had trouble removing their private billing information from the GameStop website and app, sparking mass hysteria that their credit card details might get leaked.

So, what's actually happening? Well, it might not be as terrible as it seems. According to GameStop Guest Care (an officially verified Twitter support account for GameStop), the 'leaked'  customer information was supposedly test data created by one of GameStop's team. As a result, it's possible that users did not actually have their account details leaked.

This was revealed after a concerned user contacted GameStop Guest Care via private direct messages, querying the issue and asking if their payment and billing information was "at risk." The company subsequently responded, stating that the problem was "immediately fixed the same day it took place" and it was "test data created randomly by our teams, not actual customer data."

That said, regardless of whether GameStop's user information was leaked or not, the mass hysteria it caused hasn't been great for anyone (including the company). Following the "leak," GameStop's stocks dropped rapidly in the last 24 hours, down by 1.99% (and dropping) at the time of writing. In addition, users on Reddit have been encouraging stockholders to sell their shares, with many users closing their accounts entirely.

GameStop's official account has not yet released a public statement to confirm if the leaked customer data is legitimate. The only information concerning the incident came via a screenshot of a private discussion with GameStop Guest Care from a Twitter user who allegedly contacted the company. In this regard, we recommend users remain vigilant and to appropriate measures to protect their sensitive information.

We will endeavor to update you regarding any further developments.
