New World: How does levelling work?

The levelling system in an RPG is one of the most important elements - here is how it works in New World.

Upon first entering Aeternum in New World, you’ll be presented with a short introduction about how the in-game levelling works.

To break it down, there are many different systems that incorporate the levelling as a whole and each is unique. You can level your character, weapons and skills but first, let’s go into the basics that you’ll first see when you make a new character in New World.

The most basic levelling system is your overall character level, which can be seen at the bottom of the HUD screen. Like in most other RPGs, you can earn XP from completing quests, killing enemies and other actions that go toward your overall level. Once you hit a new level threshold, you can spend one Attribute point.

There are currently five Attributes in New World, being Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Focus and Constitution. You can read about what each one does in the menu or on New World’s website. These Attributes start out with 5 base points in them and cannot dip below that. Every level gives you one point to put in one Attribute, with the max for each being 60 at this time.

Also, a part of the levelling system is the Trade Skill trees. Trade Skills are non-combat skills that can be levelled up just like your overall character. However, each skill needs to be levelled up separately through specific actions. The skills are Gathering, Refining and Crafting and each one has sub-skills that you can view below.

  • Gathering: Mining, Skinning, Logging, and Harvesting
  • Refining: Smelting, Stonecutting, Woodworking, Tanning, and Weaving
  • Crafting: Weaponsmithing, Armoring, Jewelcrafting, Engineering, Arcana, Cooking, and Furnishing

To view how to level up each skill, you can once again visit New World’s website or simply play the game to get a true firsthand experience.

Finally, you can level up your weapons in New World. Each weapon is able to be levelled up, as there are a wide variety of weapon types available. All weapon types have two Skill Trees that possess three slots for abilities purchased through the trees. Those abilities are then able to be improved through using points you earn by using that specific weapon type to kill enemies.

There’s a ton of levelling to do in New World, so it’s unlikely players will get bored in Aeternum anytime soon after the game’s official launch of 31st August.
