Serious Sam 4 release window and Legion System revealed

All the way back in March 2001, the first Serious Sam game released. Now, developer Croteam and publisher Devolver Digital have revealed the release date window for Serious Sam 4.

Alongside the release date window reveal, Serious Sam 4's Legion System has also been showcased, and it sounds incredible.

Serious Sam 4 release date

Serious Sam 4 will release in August 2020, nearly 20 years after the original. The game will release on PC via Steam as well as Google Stadia.

The game was first revealed back in 2013, and it has been quite some time since we've had a proper look at the fourth mainline entry into the iconic FPS franchise.

Console players will have to wait longer to get their hands on Serious Sam 4. The console release will only happen next year.

This was revealed by Kotaku, who spoke to a rep from Devolver Digital, explaining in an email: “The game is still coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 after its period of exclusivity is over with Stadia."

At the time of writing, it is unclear exactly when Serious Sam 4 will release on PS4 and Xbox One. Further, a next-gen console version has not been announced just yet.

Serious Sam 4 Legion System

Alongside the release date window announcement for Serious Sam 4, comes more Legion System details. The franchise has always been about throwing a plethora of enemies at the player, and Serious Sam 4 is taking this aspect to the next level.

The Serious Sam 4 Legion System will allow for hundreds of thousands of enemies on screen. Yes, hundreds of thousands...

Serious Sam 4 graphics engineer, Dean Sekulić, said the Legion System is a "nice trick", allowing for "thousands and thousands, hundreds of thousands" of enemies on the screen at the same time.

Mr Sekulić explained: "This is one of the systems we actually developed for Serious Sam 4. We have some levels that we'll actually be able to populate with this many enemies.

"We were really pleasantly surprised with how fast it can run, because originally we were hoping for like 10,000 enemies, and now we've hit an order of magnitude more."
