Skullgirls, the indie 2D fighting game that's been around since 2012 has found new life recently thanks to solid online play, feature plenty of fighting games with even bigger budgets fail at, and with the support of some of the FGC's biggest names like Dominique "SonicFox" McLean, the Skullgirls Championship Series has been born.

Defying everyone's expectations, Skullgirls is set to become one of 2021's most hyped fighting games, with plenty of tournaments and the SCS to top it all off, looking to crown a definitive champion.

Without further ado, let's tell you everything you need to know about the Skullgirls Championship Series.

Skullgirls Championship Series - Format

There will be a total of three Majors, named Blockbusters, with players earning points throughout these as well as minor events to qualify for the Skullgirls 2021 Championship.

Here are the points awarded for top placements during Blockbusters events:

For the minor events, this is the point distribution:

The top 15 players with the most points will qualify for the Championship, with a Last Chance Qualifier held before the event to determine the last competitor.

In terms of eligibility, "all competitors must be a legal resident of the countries located in the North American region comprising Mexico, Canada, and the United States of America in order to participate," according to the official rules.

As for the Blockbuster event format, it's as follows:

Equipment Requirement: PC and ethernet only

Ruleset: 

  • Best of 5 series (First to 3 games)

  • Random Stage Selection

  • Winner must keep team and assists, but may change team order

  • Loser may switch team, order, and assists

Qualifiers: Each Blockbuster event will have open qualifiers. Each Qualifier will feature double elimination pools of varying sizes and advancements. This will culminate with the top 16 players advancing on to the main event.

The first event in the series will be the Spring Blockbuster scheduled for this upcoming 24th April. Here's the confirmed lineup of events in the SCS:

  • April 16-17, 2021: Online Qualifiers - Qualifying Event for Spring Blockbuster
  • April 24, 2021: Online Tournament - Spring Blockbuster
  • To be announced: Online Qualifiers & Tournament - Summer Blockbuster
  • To be announced: Online Qualifiers & Tournament - Fall Blockbuster
  • To be announced: Online Qualifiers - Last Chance Qualifiers
  • To be announced: Online Tournament - Skullgirls 2021 Championship

Skullgirls Championship Series - Prize pool

The circuit has a total prize pool of $17,500 up for grabs, with the first Blockbuster boasting  $2,500 in cash prizes.
