The Last of Us Remake - Release date, platforms, developer, more

Naughty Dog's The Last of Us is one of the most celebrated video games in history. The Last of Us 2 was an even bigger critical and commercial success, setting a benchmark for modern AAA video games through its narrative and visuals. With HBO now helming The Last of Us TV series, it was only a matter of time before an inevitable The Last of Us remake happened.

The news about The Last of Us Remake has been swirling around the internet for a while now, with recent leaks suggesting that a reveal is not far.

With that said, here's everything that we know about this alleged The Last of Us Remake, including its release date, the platforms it would ship to, its developer, and more.

When is The Last of Us Remake releasing?

According to GamesBeat journalist Jeff Grubb, The Last of Us Remake is targeting a holiday 2022 release window. "I keep hearing that's coming out this year, Grubb said during an episode of Kinda Funny Gamescast. Grubb further solidified the rumour by saying that he was "pretty confident" about the holiday 2022 release.

Grubb's information coincides with that of games journalist Tom Henderson, who talked about The Last of Us Remake releasing in the second half of the year, alongside The Last of Us 2 Director's Cut and The Last Of Us 2's standalone multiplayer mode. If the aforementioned info is true, fans could expect an announcement very soon.

To make things more interesting, the head of PlayStation Studios, Hermen Hulst, recently visited Naughty Dog and posted a picture on Twitter with Neil Druckmann and Evan Wells that said, "Couldn't be more excited for what this team is cooking up."

At the time of this writing, PlayStation has not confirmed an E3 style summer event similar to Xbox Games Showcase, though if it does, fans could expect The Last of Us Remake to be one of the major announcements.

Who is making The Last of Us Remake?

A 2021 report from Bloomberg suggested that Sony's San Diego Visual Arts Service Group started the development of The Last of Us Remake.

At that time, Naughty Dog was busy finishing up The Last of Us 2. After the sequel shipped, it seems that Naughty Dog took over the development of The Last of Us Remake. If true, this would be Naughty Dog's first PS5 title.

What platform would The Last of Us Remake release to?

According to the rumours, it seems The Last of Us Remake will be a next-gen only title. Naughty Dog has a history of shipping some of the most visually impressive and polished AAA titles, so it's exciting to see what a Naughty Dog project exclusive to the PS5 console would look like.

On a speculative note, it is possible that The Last of Us Remake would eventually come to PC. PlayStation has made its ambitions of releasing PC ports of its first-party games pretty clear with the recent and upcoming releases like Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War and Uncharted - Legacy of Thieves Collection.

Given the popularity of The Last of Us IP in general, coupled with the upcoming The Last of Us TV series, not releasing The last of Us Remake on PC would be a missed opportunity, something that PlayStation would likely not want. That's everything you need to know about the rumoured The Last of Us Remake.
