The Super Mario Bros Movie is now the second highest-grossing animated film ever at the global box office.
That's according to a site that collates movie ticket sales data, The Numbers, which states that the Mario movie has grossed $1,294,577,622 since it was released worldwide in theatres back in April. In terms of all-time worldwide animated box office, that leaves the list as follows:
- Frozen II - $1,453,683,476
- The Super Mario Bros Movie- $1,294,577,622
- Frozen - $1,284,540,518
- Incredibles 2 - $1,243,705,359
- Minions - $1,157,271,759
- Toy Story 4 - $1,073,064,540
- Toy Story 3 - $1,068,879,522
- Despicable Me 3 - $1,032,809,657
- Finding Dory - $1,025,006,125
- Zootopia - $1,002,462,578
This also makes the Super Mario Bros Movie the highest-grossing movie of 2023 so far, with only Guardians 3 coming anywhere near the numbers it has produced. In direct response to the success of the Mario movie, Eiji Aounuma, producer of The Legend of Zelda series, stated his interest in making a movie adaptation:
"I have to say, I am interested. For sure. But it's not just me being interested in something that makes things happen, unfortunately"
