Valheim Crafting Guide: All recipes, upgrades, items, weapons, and armour

Being a custodian of the primordial purgatory known as Valheim is not an easy task.

In your life, you were a mighty warrior, but here you are left on your own against some of the most dreadful monsters you can imagine.

That's why you will need to use everything you have at your disposal to your advantage and maximise your chances for survival.

As with almost any survival RPG, crafting is one of the key mechanics you will use, and it is especially important in the early stages of the game when you basically have nothing, resources are scarce, and you start just with your bare hands.

To being crafting you will need materials, some basic tools, and a Workbench. For a detailed guide on how to start your first day in Valheim, check out our Valheim Beginners' Guide.

The Workbench upgrades in Valheim

Almost everything starts from your Workbench(Picture: Iron Gate AB)

Your Workbench is your bread and butter, one of the most important things in the game. It allows you to craft tools, weapons and armours, as well as to build all kinds of buildings.

Currently, there is a maximum of 4 levels of upgrades for the Workbench, but in order to upgrade it, you will need to unlock recipes for the upgrades and collect required materials.

  • Level 1: Default Workbench
  • Level 2: Chopping Block Workbench
  • Level 3: Tanning Rack Workbench
  • Level 4: Adze Workbench

The default Workbench cost 10 Wood and you can create it from the Hammer menu. You will, of course, need to craft hammer first, one of your two basic tools.

With workbench's basic form, you can already do a lot of things. You won't need upgraded versions from the start, but it will be useful to upgrade it at some point. Resources are scarce so you will need to estimate when is the best moment for the upgrade.

Chopping Block Workbench

To unlock the Chopping Block Workbench upgrade recipe, you will need to have a Default Workbench and find 1x Flint.

To craft the Chopping Block Workbench, you will need 10x Wood and 10x Flint.

Tanning Rack Workbench

To obtain the Tanning Rack Workbench upgrade recipe, you will need to hunt a deer for the first time and to have the previous level Workbench.

The Tanning Rack Workbench upgrade requires 10x Wood, 15x Flint, 20x Leather Scrap, and 5x Deer Hide.

Adze Workbench

The final form of a Workbench in Valheim is the Adze Workbench.

Unlocking the Adze Workbench recipe requires to collect 1x Fine Wood from a birch tree and to own a few Bronze Nails, which you can get by smelting Bronze Ingots.

Valheim Antler Pickaxe: How to craft and crafting recipe

Asides from a hammer and an axe, one of the most important early tools you'll make is the pickaxe.

The Antler pickaxe is used to harvest ores, rare metals, and ingots, and it is crucial for you to start crafting more complex stuff, including some of the best weapons and armour available in the game.

In order to craft the pickaxe, you will first need to obtain the recipe for it.

To get the pickaxe recipe you will need to defeat Elkthyr, the first boss of Valhiem.

Once you beat him, you will unlock the option to craft the pickaxe, and you will also get the required materials to craft it.

Elkthyr will always drop antlers, which you will need to craft the pickaxe. Materials needed to craft Antler pickaxe are 1x Hard Antler and 10x Wood.

Later in the game, you will be able to craft Stone Pickaxe, Iron Pickaxe and Bronze Pickaxe. For the required materials, see the list below.
