Stranger Things Star David Harbour Says WoW 'Ruined My Life"

Stranger Things actor, David Harbour, revealed on the Stranger Things Official After Show why World of Warcraft "ruined" his life.
Stranger Things Star David Harbour Says WoW 'Ruined My Life"

What do actors do when they’re not acting? They’re playing video games, of course! Over the years, legendary actors like Chloë Grace Moretz, Herny Cavill, and even Asa Butterfield have openly admitted that during their free time, when not performing in A-listing movies, they’re slaying orcs, shooting monsters, or doing both at the same time.

That said, David Harbour, who played the role of Jim Hopper in the esteemed Netflix series Stranger Things, confessed that he was totally into gaming. During the Stranger Things Official After Show that aired on 9th June 2022, Harbour admitted that World of Warcraft completely took over him in 2005 and stated the game “ruined” his life.

Why Did World of Warcraft Ruin David Harbour’s Life?

During Stranger Things Official After Show, Harbour was asked multiple questions, one of which included his past playing World of Warcraft. Winona Ryder, who played Joyce Byers in Stranger Things, accompanied Harbour during the show.

When asked about World of Warcraft, Harbour stated it was “the most embarrassing thing in my existence.” Ryder responded, having no clue about the game, asking what World of Warcraft was, and then Harbour laid his “embarrassing” story down about the game ruining his life.

Harbour stated, “In 2005, I played the sh*t out of this game. It ruined my life for like a year. I mean, I was like out of my mind. I was wildly addicted to this video game. I was a Night Elf warrior called Norad, and he was the second tank of my whole guild.”

In addition, Harbour also stated he was utterly “addicted” to World of Warcraft, even becoming a Raid member for his guild and partaking in boss fights and such. Following this, Harbour revealed another game that helped pull him out of playing World of Warcraft so frequently. That game was The Sims.

Harbour stated, "It's so funny because I also played The Sims. You ever play The Sims? You could be an actor on The Sims. You can progress in your career, but what you have to do is work on things. You have to work on your speech and on your body, right?”

"I remember my avatar got to a certain level in his career, and I kept trying to get him to work on his speech. He was like a supporting player, but I wanted him to work on his speech and his body, and all he wanted to do was sit around and play video games. And then I was like, whoa whoa whoa, I had this vortex moment where I saw my life before my eyes,” Harbour added.

Ryder, who seemed very concerned over video games ruining Harbour’s life, stated that actors playing The Sims could possibly impact their mental health. Ryder stated, "an actor playing that game could really mess with your head.” Harbour responded, “that's what it did, and that's why my life was ruined."

Laughing all together because of the “embarrassing” confession from Harbour, the interviewer noted the actor’s life wasn’t “ruined,”, especially after such a fantastic performance throughout Stranger Things. Harbour concluded that segment, stating, "I came back. I'm the comeback kid. I'm the Tyson Fury of acting."

Will Harbour ever return to his post as a protector of Azeroth once again? That's for time to tell and fans to anticipate. Long live, Norad! Until then, feel free to watch the Stranger Things Official After Show above. The discussion begins at 17:07 in the video.
