WWE fans around the world were disappointed to find out that WWE 2K21 is officially cancelled, but at least they will get some alternative.

Earlier this week we got an official confirmation that this year's edition of WWE 2k game has been cancelled. After many rumours and speculations, This was confirmed by WWE CFO Frank Riddick, who have talked about it during an investors call.

But, this does not mean that there will be no WWE games this year. Publisher 2K announced WWE 2K Battlegrounds, a game developed by Saber Interactive studio, who had previously worked on games like Quake Champions and NBA 2K Playgrounds.

"We’re thrilled to introduce you to WWE 2K Battlegrounds, a completely new WWE gaming experience that will feature arcade-style action and over-the-top Superstar designs, environments and moves. We’re focusing on social pick-up-and-play fun, but with plenty of depth for those who want to get way into it," says in the official announcement. "Whether you’re a casual gamer just learning the ropes or a passionate fan ready for all the action, WWE 2K Battlegrounds provides another way to enjoy WWE video game action."

In the statement, they also mentioned a bit mistakes they've made with WWE 2k20 and that they will continue to listen to players feedback and make things right. Also, they will leave WWE 2k19 servers up and running "for the time being", because that's what players want. Finally, they say that that will give as much time as needed for guys and girls at Visual Concept to make a proper new WWE 2K game, and that's why they are making a one year break with the franchise.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is scheduled to launch this fall.
