Dead Space Remake - Release date, features, gameplay, and more

Dead Space, the cult classic horror video game of 2008 defined as "Resident Evil in Space" is set to return with a brand new remake that we will be getting our hands on in January 2023. This gives us a lot to look forward to over the next few short weeks.

But what can we expect from this brand-new remake? And will it hold up to its predecessor? In this article, we aim to answer these questions as we look at what we know so far about the Dead Space Remake, including the release date, trailer, features, and more.

Dead Space Remake – Release date and trailer

The Dead Space Remake is set to release on the 27th January 2023 for PC, Playstation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. EA has also come forward to confirm that the game will not be available on PS4 or Xbox One as their goal is to leverage the performance and capabilities of the next-gen consoles and the Frostbite engine.

Senior producer Phillippe Ducharme stated in a press release: “We’re making great progress on our road to hitting Alpha, and we’re happy to announce that the game will be launching in January next year”. And thankfully there have been no setbacks in production so fans can look forward to the game's release later this month.

Based on what we see in the trailer above, the game will be similar to the original but might feature some new content. The game's engine and mechanics have also been on display in a presentation by the developers, which gives us quite a bit to chew on in terms of what we can expect.

Dead Space Remake – Gameplay features

The original Dead Space game, and subsequently, its gameplay, was first conceptualized as "Resident Evil in Space" by its original executive producer Glen Schofield. This is evident in the game's third-person over-the-shoulder gameplay, with the use of guns and some melee combat.

Dead Space also mirrored the horror element featured in Glen's favorite Resident Evil title, Resident Evil 4, also a fan favorite even to this day for its balanced, yet challenging combat, horror-themed environment, and terrifying enemies.

The Dead Space Remake is said to take everything the first game offered and improve, build on and outdo it in all these aspects that made the original Dead Space such a fan favorite. The game will feature enhanced graphical fidelity, and gameplay mechanics, smoothing out the sometimes clunky feel and subpar graphics the original had when playing.

With the use of the Frostbite game engine, we expect to see improvements to the lighting and visual effects, giving the game a fresh and terrifying look, surpassing the original.

The new Remake will see players traversing horror-themed environments, killing zombie-like enemies called Necromorphs, and discovering the horrific secrets that caused it all. The player (Isaac Clarke) uses futuristic, space-age weapons and technology to combat these creatures and the Remake promises to make retreading this journey even more terrifying than before based on the developer stream shown above.

The story of the Remake will have us relive the nightmare of the protagonist of the first game, Isaac Clarke, originally a voiceless character, but n the remake he will actually speak and have dialogue lines. Isaac is an Engineer aboard a crew vessel that was sent to repair the USG Ishimura, a massive planetary mining ship that has gone dark for unknown reasons.

When sent to investigate the distress signal sent by Ishimura's medical officer (Isaacs's girlfriend), he and his team get trapped aboard the ship. And are forced to uncover the truth of what happened aboard the Ishimura as they attempt to escape the terrifying creatures that hunt them down.
