What is egregore in Destiny 2?

The egregore fungus seems to be spreading throughout the Leviathan and into the H.E.L.M in Destiny 2, but what exactly is it?
What is egregore in Destiny 2?

Season of the Haunted in Destiny 2 brought the return of the long-lost derelict Leviathan Cabal ship, holding even more mysteries than before as it seems Emperor Calus has had some run-in with the Darkness and The Witness itself.

We saw bits and pieces of what Calus was up to in previous seasons, particularly when the Presage exotic mission was released, which tasked Guardians with unravelling the mysterious of what happened inside the Glykon Volatus. Now, thanks to the Season of the Haunted weekly missions and the Duality dungeon lore, we have a more clear idea as to what Calus wants with the Darkness and why he has returned.

Just like the Glykon, the now derelict Leviathan massive ship seems to have been overrun by a fungus-like life form called egregore. Mechanically, it serves the same purpose as it did during Presage, letting players go through barriers generated by the fungus itself.

Lore-wise, the egregore might have a deeper connection to the Darkness. With players spotting egregore spores inside the Hub for Emergency Logistics and Maneuvers (H.E.L.M), Destiny 2 fans are now more than ever curious to find out the true nature of the fungus.

As we've mentioned, the egregore fungus was first introduced with the Presage mission after Calus attempted to commute with the Darkness aboard the Glykon ship. It seems his experiment ended up badly for everyone on board, with the fungus quickly taking over the drifting ship.

The egregore itself within Destiny 2 seems to feed on strong-minded individuals sharing one common goal, matching the real-life definition of the word, which states that an egregore is the collective representation of a non-physical entity that arises from the thoughts of a certain group of people.

It is said that the egregore shares a deep connection with the Darkness, letting people that get in contact with its spores open their minds to it. It seems that, eventually, the fungus will take control of individuals, letting their strong-wills feed the egregore and, possibly, corrupt their thoughts in the process.

As the Season of the Haunted progress and Destiny 2 leads into the forthcoming Lightfall expansion, the mysteries of the egregore and its connection with the Darkness may finally be revealed.
