Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Can You Play As Vincent Valentine?

With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on the horizon, many are wondering if they'll be able to play as Vincent Valentine.

Square Enix are gearing up to launch Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second entry into the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project. The story is set to pick up once Cloud and party leave Midgar and set out on their journey to pursue Sephiroth. But, much like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, things are set to deviate from the story we all know and love.

Players will get the chance to explore familiar locations in a new, in-depth fashion, traverse the overworld on Chocobos, and experience new minigames across their adventure. But, those who know the original story of Final Fantasy 7 will be eager to meet the remaining characters, namely Vincent Valentine.

This optional undead companion was traditionally recruited in the Shinra Mansion basement in Nibelheim, found sleeping in a coffin. Judging from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth trailers, players might be meeting Vincent in a similar setting. But will he be playable in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?

Sadly, no. Despite the game being set to release in February 2024, it's already been confirmed that Vincent will not be a playable character in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. His role in the game can be likened to that of Red XIII towards the end of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, where he will primarily be an AI controlled party member.

In an interview with IGN, director Naoki Hamaguchi said of Vincent's role, "In terms of whether or not Vincent will be a playable character, he will be more of an accompanying character to the party in terms of Rebirth." He went on to draw comparisons to Red XIII's character in the previous title, "So this will be similar to how Red XIII was in Remake."

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to release on February 29, 2024. The game will be a PlayStation 5 console exclusive.
