The Phasmophobia progression overhaul update is coming soon, and with it comes a series of other changes, too, including new equipment, a prestige system, and more. Kinetic Games has published several development updates along the way to give players a teaser of what's to come.

Most recently, Kinetic Games posted Phasmophobia's Development Update 12 in late July 2023. Here's a look at everything that was revealed in Phasmophobia's Development Update #12, including new details about progression and Salt evidence.

Development update 12 focuses on two major upcoming update areas: progression and changes to Salt.

Progression Updates

  • Experience and money are now correlated; 100xp means $100. This means that players will earn a lot more than before for completing main objectives.
  • Each level's required experience increases as you level. The closer you get to level 100, the greater the experience needed to level up again.
  • When you reach level 100 you'll be able to pick a path:
    • Continue playing as you are, leveling your account past 100*
    • Prestige; this resets your money, level, and equipment, but earns you an additional Loadout Slot, a new unique badge and title for your ID card, and a new patch for your player's arm
  • Some items will now be consumable, with upgrades to make them non-consumable.

You can decide to prestige at any time after hitting level 100.

Salt Updates

While Salt was once only good for completing side objectives in Phasmophobia, it can now help players gain evidence through Footprints.

Salt will have 3 tiers, like all other equipment (descriptions courtesy of Kinetic Games):

  • Tier I is the Ghost Huntin' Salt shaker, it can place two piles per canister, and you can bring three canisters into each contract. The Footprints created by stepping in this pile will act in the same way as fingerprints for that ghost e.g. an Obake may leave fewer footprints than other ghosts!
  • Tier II is a wooden container filled with a special pink Himalayan Salt. With its larger capacity, you can place three piles down, but instead of a small spot, you can place a line of salt, perfect for blocking doorways or corridors.
  • Tier III is a glass bottle filled with a custom blend of Black Salt that has been blessed.
    • If a ghost steps in this during its passive state, it will be repelled back the way it came. Allowing you to effectively trap a ghost in its room if you place the salt correctly.
    • During the ghost's hunting state; if a ghost passes through this special salt, it will be slowed down considerably for a short time.

With the reveal of Phasmophobia's twelfth development update, it seems pretty likely that the game's progression update is coming relatively soon. It'll include updates to equipment across the board, a new prestige system, and more.

It's also worth noting that Phasmophobia is coming to consoles in August, so players will be able to get their hands on the game on PlayStation or Xbox very soon.
