What Is The Memento Background In Pokémon GO?

Trainers around the world launched Pokémon GO to find something new that had been added in-game. This can be found within the Pokémon Collection tab using the search feature to discover this filter in-game. But what has left many baffled is what this new filter means, how it works, and what it is tied to. So if you are wondering, "what is the Memento Background filter, and how can you find it in Pokémon GO?" look no further than this guide!

What Is The Memento Background Filter In Pokémon GO?

Niantic has officially added a new filter within Pokémon GO’s search feature, which Trainers should be able to find. From the Map View, tap on the Pokémon button, which brings you to your Pokémon Collection, and tap the Search bar, where you can find the “Has Memento Background” filter.

This filter was first reported by notable Pokémon dataminer, Pokéminers in January 2023, when they datamined several files and uncovered the addition of this feature. It also revealed that this filter is tied to Location Cards, which this feature will be included and go live for the upcoming Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn – Las Vegas event.

According to the multiple Resource IDs they’ve uncovered, you’ll be notified in-game when you’ve received a Location Card with the Memento Background, which can be acquired from special events and locations like the Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn – Las Vegas event. During this in-person event, you’ll be able to receive a Location Card when catching Pokémon from Raid Battles at specific locations.

These Location Cards will come with a unique background that appears on that specific Pokémon’s card, indicating where they were caught and which events they were caught. This can be lost if you transfer Pokémon with Memento Background, which we advise only to agree if you have a specific Pokémon with the same Memento Background.

To search for which Pokémon has this unique background, use the keyword “mementobackground” in the Search bar, and tapping on the filter will bring up all caught Pokémon with this filter. No further confirmation on which Pokémon and Raid events you can earn Location Cards from; we’ll update this guide with more information once they become available.
