Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Players Slam Games' Bugs & Tech Issues

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have the potential to go far, but their performance and visual issues are too horrendous to make them good games.
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Players Slam Games' Bugs & Tech Issues

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were arguably among the world's most anticipated games. Following their debut on 18 November 2022, players started exploring the open-world region of Paldea and all the new Pokémon scattered across the cliffs, rivers, and grassy plains. That said, despite Pokémon Scarlet and Violet being among the most-awaited titles since Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the games were a massive disappointment for multiple players.

On Metacritic, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have an audience rating of 2.9, which is incredibly low for any title in the franchise. Despite critic reviews scoring Pokémon Scarlet and Violet with an overall Metascore of 77, most players seem to disagree with the positive opinions about the title. As of writing, 518 people have negatively reviewed Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, most complaining about the games' horrendous state and terrible performance. In addition, most positive audience reviews are seemingly disingenuous, attempting to outweigh the negative scores.

So, why are Pokémon Scarlet and Violet getting so much hate? Well, it all comes down to Nintendo and Game Freak. Player reports (as well as my own) suggest that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet perform tremendously badly on Nintendo Switch, with the games slowing down and lagging the more they're played.

Beyond this, there are several moments when a player encounters some environmental, visual, or design glitch that completely morphs a character, Pokémon, or even the terrain itself. If that weren't all, there'd probably be fewer complaints, but Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's visual design is subpar, outdated, unpolished, and unfinished. Put bluntly: the games look like they're months away from being finalized as actual products that Nintendo would sell.

It's not necessarily that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are facing issues that make it horrendously bad, but rather the mere fact that the game clearly isn't ready. If Game Freak took a little more time, maybe three to six months, to fine-tune the title, they might have been smashing hits.

However, unfortunately, that's not what's happening. Until Game Freak or Nintendo addresses these issues, players will have to deal with the games' current state for a little longer.
