How to get Defog in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Defog is a pesky yet much-needed HM if players want to make life easy in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Hidden Moves, or HMs, work differently in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl than they did in the original games. While players still need them to access certain areas, they aren’t required to teach them to any of their Pokémon. This is terrific for players who hated wasting a move slot on a pointless HM that was only required for one area.

However, this also means that receiving the HMs is just as important as before. Now, players can use them at any time through the Pokétch. Any Rock Smash boulder or body of water can be interacted with no matter what Pokémon players have in their party.

Perhaps the best example of players wanting to use a HM is with Defog. The move itself is somewhat pointless but using it is essential in some areas of Sinnoh. Below, players can find out exactly how to acquire Defog.

You’ll want to begin your Defog quest by being able to reach the Great Marsh, which is located in Pastoria City. This is the city you’ll visit after beating the Veilstone City Gym Leader, Maylene.

Once in Pastoria, head north to find the Great Marsh. You can enter for a small fee and go about catching a number of rare Pokémon. However, one of the real prizes is acquiring Defog from a random NPC. This NPC has green hair and is found just east of one of the train stops.

Luckily, this green-haired NPC is the first trainer that you’ll see when you walk into the Great Marsh. They’re standing to the east of the entrance and all you need to do is talk to them and you’ll receive Defog.

Now, you can use your Pokétch to use Defog in any foggy area. This includes the frustrating route to get to Celestic Town. However, you won’t be able to use Defog until you beat Crasher Wake, the Gym Leader of Pastoria City.
