PlayStation Direct source code leak suggests PS5 pre-orders will start quite soon

When will PlayStation 5 pre-order start? According to PlayStation Direct source code, that might happen sooner than previously thought.
PlayStation Direct source code leak suggests PS5 pre-orders will start quite soon

During the last few weeks, we've seen several fake leaks and rumours in regards to PS5 pre-orders starting date.

During Geoff Keighley's hands-on with the PlayStation 5's DualSense,  Eric Lempel, PlayStation head of global marketing, denied all those stories and wanted to make clear that Sony will "let you know when you can pre-order a PlayStation 5."

So, for now, that means we still don't have an official date when will PlayStation 5 pre-ordering start, but some latest leaks might indicate that PS5 pre-order is imminent.

When is PS5 pre-order start date?

The exact date is not yet known, but some lines of code about PS5 preordering are already visible on the direct.playstation.com website, which means PlayStation 5 might be available for pre-order very soon, possibly even before the end of July.

PlayStation Direct is Sony's website where you can buy PlayStation products directly from Sony and not from retails.

If you look at the page source, you'll see a couple of lines mentioning PS5.

The first one is an error message that says: "You can only purchase one version of the PS5™ Console: Disc or Digital. You have already added one PS5™ console to your cart."

This means that Sony will limit the PlayStation 5 pre-ordering to only one unit per account/address. It also means that it makes no difference between the version with a disc and digital-only.

Back in April, there were rumours that PS5 will have limited launch in 2020, but just recently it has been reported that Sony will ramp up PS5 production, from initially planned 6 million units to 10 million PS5 units by the end of 2020.

One unit per pre-order and increased production are suggesting Sony wants to make sure everyone will get their PlayStation 5 during the 2020 holiday season.

PS5 Backwards Compatibility

The second line of code is about PlayStation 4 games and their compatibility with the PlayStation 5.

You can see that line repeated on several places in the source code, which means it will be placed alongside individual game pages.

It is about a new PlayStation label with a purpose to visually mark PlayStation 4 games as PS5-compatible. Below you can see how the label will look.

Both of these codes are heavily related to PlayStation 5 and their presence in the code of the website at this point is strongly suggesting that we can expect pre-orders to start very soon, possibly even before the end of July, or in early August.
