While many expected Crash Bandicoot or a new Pokemon addition, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate threw a significant third-party curveball with their latest DLC fighter.

A selection of characters from Minecraft were revealed as the next DLC fighter, including Steve, Alex, Zombie and Enderman.

A trailer highlighted their moveset, showing them building blocks all over the stage, along with the iconic sword and pickaxe in their arsenal.

The character’s final smash was also shown, knocking the opponent into a dungeon filled with the terrifying Creepers.

The Minecraft stage also showed varying seasons with a seemingly destructible environment, all delivered in the classic Minecraft art style.

Speaking afterwards about the new character, creator Masahiro Sakurai explained the difficulties in bringing Minecraft to Smash - including having to rework all existing stages so blocks can be placed upon them.

No release date was given, although more details about Minecraft’s entry in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will arrive on Saturday 3rd October in a “Fighting with Steve & Alex” presentation.

Minecraft is the second fighter to arrive in Ultimate’s Fighters Pass 2, following the release of Min Min from ARMS earlier this year.

Interestingly, it's also the second character from a Microsoft-owned IP following Banjo Kazooie's arrival in the first Fighters Pass.
