Meet Your Maker Sector 1: Dreadshore Review

Sector 1: Dreadshore is Meet Your Maker's first major content update, introducing something new in almost every area of the game. It includes a new Custodian, weapon, trap, guard, and deco pack, giving players not only new tools to experiment with when raiding and building but also a totally new aesthetic and environment to appreciate.

From introducing new playstyles to a totally new environment, Dreadshore certainly switches things up dramatically for Meet Your Maker - but the content doesn't feel out of place in Behaviour's newest game. Without further ado, let's delve into all the new content included within Sector 1: Dreadshore, and what it says about the future of Meet Your Maker

The Nautilus Offers Players The Option To Take On New Playstyles

This new sector offers a lot of new content, so it's easy to get lost in exploring it all; however, the most stand-out aspect of it in our eyes is the new Custodian, the Nautilus, which offers players a method for playing with a more defensive playstyle. The Nautilus' Biolinks enhance defensive abilities rather than bettering the player's ranged or melee weapon, which is one way they differ from the existing Custodians.

While the Nautilus might seem like a pacifist based on his Biolinks, that perception is thrown out the window the moment you see his new weapon. The Demolition Cannon is a powerhouse, exploding enemies and easily taking down crowds of Guards. It's a nice alternative to The Nautilus' otherwise defensive approach, though it's arguably smarter to equip him with a defensive weapon like the Arc Barrier since his Biolinks do enhance its protective abilities.

On one hand, it's interesting to see a character with defense-boosting abilities but such an aggressive weapon; on the other, it's easy to question why The Nautilus didn't come with a defensive weapon of his own. The Arc Barrier is the only non-melee and non-ranged weapon in the game, so there's a lot of room for developers to add more weapons that fall out of the current status quo.

Despite the differences between his abilities and his weapon and the fact that he forces players to take a totally different approach to raiding than other Custodians, The Nautilus feels balanced upon release. This Custodian's Biolinks can definitely hold their own even in challenging Outposts, giving you plenty of opportunities to defend yourself from an onslaught of traps and Guards and offer fun new ways to counter them.

New Environments And Base-Building Possibilities

While The Nautilus and the Demolition Cannon give players entirely new ways to approach raiding bases, Sector 1: Dreadshore also provides chances to innovate in your base-building endeavors with a new guard, trap, deco pack, and environment. In stark contrast to the game's red, Mars-esque deserts called the Red Sands that players explored upon release, Dreadshore's environment lends itself to darker blues and scenes of darker desolation. On Dreadshore lies a repurposed lighthouse with a Sanctuary, containing a web of labs and prisons where illegal and secret scientific experiments were conducted. It's now abandoned, with The Nautilus, who was once a prisoner, killing those who imprisoned him.

The Sentry Beam is the game's newest trap, and it's definitely one of the most fun to use - and arguably one of the most fun to avoid as a raider, too. These beams act as lasers that focus on their targets, fire after a short time, and then ricochet. According to their lore, they were designed as a security system to keep test subjects captive in the lighthouse, and evading them certainly does give the feeling of dodging lasers in a spy movie.

With lots of Sentry Beams patrolling an area, especially when combined with Guards, this trap poses a big threat to those who don't move with haste and remain aware. That said, these beams are not totally unavoidable; in other words, they're innovative while remaining a balanced addition to the game that won't help players create any unwinnable "death traps".

While the new Guard the Ravager doesn't add quite as much variety to gameplay on both sides as the Sentry Beams, it still forces players to switch up the way they build and raid. The Ravager is a victim of the aforementioned lighthouse experiments whose vision has been heavily affected, thus seeing and shooting multiple targets even when only one is present. It's not easy to avoid the Ravager's horizontal attacks, causing players to need to switch up their approach.

All in all, Sector 1: Dreadshore will probably impress existing Meet Your Maker players with its new design style. It opens up a lot of opportunities for both base-building and raiding tactics, with the new Custodian and new Guards marking the most impactful of the changes. We're excited to see what's in store for the future of Meet Your Maker, and what we can expect for Sector 2.
