Sony Is Rumored To Acquire CD Projekt

Rumors about Sony Interactive Entertainment acquiring CD Projekt have spread, but is it actually happening?
Sony Is Rumored To Acquire CD Projekt

The popular video game development company CD Projekt has been on a roll lately after announcing so many upcoming games and projects for the coming years. From additional Cyberpunk 2077 games to The Witcher remake and more, CD Projekt has been unveiling one title after another. In saying so, some wonder if the company has always planned for this to happen or if the evident success of its growth is attributed to something much larger afoot or coming.

Rumors have spread—those being CD Projekt is allegedly discussing acquisition offers with Sony Interactive Entertainment or possibly already agreed to one. These speculations result from CD Projekt's recent project announcements, with the company scaling back up after Cyberpunk 2077's supposed turnaround in profit, thanks to Studio Trigger and Netflix's assistance on the series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Even though these rumors have little backing or creditable information to support them, an acquisition wouldn't be impossible.

Will Sony Acquire CD Projekt?

It's crazy to see the length CD Projekt has come after supposedly losing so much because of Cyberpunk 2077 flopping at launch. Of course, it's probably made all of its money back, especially after selling over twenty million copies of the game and becoming one of the most concurrently played games on Steam at one point, thanks to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

But even with the newly-announced projects, as well as a roadmap assuring fans and investors of the company's growth, could and would Sony acquire CD Projekt?

Gaming industry analyst, Rythian, speculates it's already in the works and that CD Projekt's recently unveiled projects are for the purpose of "boosting" its stocks before the acquisition.

Rythian stated that with CD Projekt's revenue rising because of its recent success with the Netflix series and the promise of growth because of the game projects, the company had attracted Sony's attention. Even though CD Projekt's stocks have climbed in the past year, Sony's eyeing the company, not for its short-term return in profit, but the massive growth for the indefinite future.

Sony, one of the biggest video game publishers in the world, is always looking to bolster its group of developers. The company alone acquired Naughty Dog, Insomniac Interactive, Guerilla Games, and many more video game development companies.

In addition, knowing Sony's rivalry with Microsoft, an acquisition of CD Projekt, especially at one of its highest peaks, would be a tremendously great move.

Noting that Microsoft's recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard this year has established another forefront across the American game industry, CD Projekt might be Sony's chance at tackling RPG titles in Europe.

That said, an article by PC Gamer's Executive Editor, Tyler Wilde, suggests that an acquisition probably won't happen, and other analysts don't think "a bunch of game announcements is enough to go on."

But then again, who knows what might happen. However, the short answer is no; Sony isn't officially acquiring CD Projekt. Maybe not yet—maybe not ever. Only time will tell.
