God of War Laufey has a release date: February 16, 2027, and Sony Santa Monica Studio creative head Sony Santa Monica creative head Cory Barlog announced that the next God of War will connect directly to the Laufey story and star Kratos after it.
Barlog made both announcements during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, revealing that the follow-up to Laufey will connect directly to its story and bring Kratos back to the lead role. No further details on that next game were shared during the panel.
What Is God of War Laufey?
Laufey is the first mainline God of War title to put someone other than Kratos at the centre – specifically Faye (Laufey the Just), Kratos’s Norse wife and Atreus’s mother, who dies before the events of the 2018 God of War. The game picks up with Faye awakening in a mysterious realm called the Everywhen – described as the afterlife of the gods – after her funeral, and must fight through the Everywhen to protect the futures of Kratos and Atreus.

Barlog explained his reasoning for building the game around her, saying he wanted to show an extension of the world with unexpected characters, and that Laufey is both a continuation of what came before and preparation for what comes next. Santa Monica debuted more than 20 minutes of gameplay during a State of Play in June, where the Everywhen setting and its gods from across mythology were first shown in action.
Physical Edition Confirmed
Sony Santa Monica has also confirmed that God of War Laufey will be available on disc – a notable detail given Sony’s recent and controversial announcement that PlayStation will be winding down physical media production. Sony has confirmed God of War Laufey will be available on disc.

With Kratos’s return now officially on the table and Laufey shaping up as a proper chapter in the saga rather than a side story, Santa Monica is clearly building toward something larger.
